Default Sport Hood LED Mod

So, I have seen some interest in how to do the whole LED's in the fake vents on the sport hood so this is my attempt at a tutorial. I didnt take many pictures with the thoughts of doing this so I apologize for the lack of quality/detail in the pics. I do have some that show the key points of what you will need to do. I ordered 50 5mm super white LED's off ebay from Hong Kong ish for about $10 bucks that were pre wired for 12v applications. This is a lot easier as well because it gives you about an 8" pigtail to work with for wiring. I thought about making up a circuit board for this project but decided to take the easy way out and see if I like them first.

First, remove the vent inserts in the hood. This is accomplished by pulling the heat shield down under the hood to gain access to the bottom of the vents. The vents are held in with 2 pressure tabs on locking lips on the vent. Carefully pull down under the hood on the tabs/pushing down on the hood in front of the vents to free the clips. Once you see it, you will understand.

The plastic vents are not too thick so minimal effort is required to drill the holes. I used a drill bit just big enough to allow the wires to be routed through and that was it. Only drill the full size honey combs, the LED's are too big for the smaller ones. Once you have all the holes drilled, begin placing the led's in the holes and secure them how you see fit. I used the wife's hot glue gun, easy to peel off and if I need to replace one I can do it without much effort to remove the bonding agent. 2 part epoxy could do the trick, just gets hard and messy. Organize your wires so all positive leads are facing one direction and negative the other. This makes it easier to wire. Once you have them all secured to the vents gather all the wires up and combine them into one lead. Repeat for the other vent and then combine your wires and hook up how you like. (headlights, blinkers, aux switch) How you choose to run the wires, connect the wires and seal the wires should be no problem for you if taking this project on. If you dont know what to do, dont try. The pictures will give you more information than the words will, so build your plan and have fun. If you have any questions just ask.

KC.

No that is cool. Wish I had the sport hood. I would be doing the same thing.

I appreciate the ingenuity of this, as well as the shear time it must have taken to painstakingly drill all those holes, hot glue in LEDs and wire it all up.

Did you use all 50 LEDs and how do you turn it on, or is it on all the time?

That looks great and good job turning something into nothing. I would advise though, depending on the laws in your state to avoid any of the emergency colors blue, red and so on. Did you install a switch to turn just those lights on/off? That would look cool at night with just those lights switched on....would make people be like...whoa!

Dang! I hate I saw this!.. Now I want to do it. It looks great. I wonder if this would fall in line with having to many lights on while driving. Cause from the pic, it looks like you have six lights on.
