Default Question about towing, 2001 Ram 1500 5.2L

Hello,

I'm new to the truck world, just picked up a 2001 RAM 1500 5.2L Magnum 3 door (is that a club or a quad cab?) short bed automatic. Needs a slight bit of work but runs pretty solid for the most part. Now the question is, I'm looking to pick up a third gen Camaro for something to fix up, and I found a deal on one that's approx. 40 miles from where I live. Tow trucks are too expensive, so I wanted to see about maybe renting a dolly and towing it, but I know ziltch about towing with a pickup truck... I see in the rear bumper where it has the hole(s) for a ball hitch, is it that simple to bolt up a heavy ball hitch to the bumper and towing the car with the dolly? The weight of the Camaro should be around 3100-3200lbs...

Any help/advice would be appreciated...

Thanks,
Warren

Here's a quick google search for info on towing.

http://www.uhaul.com/Trailers/HitchGlossary/

I don't recomend the bumper hitch more then likley it will be too high anyhow.

Good luck.

With a 4th gen, you could probably do it. They have the crossmember that goes under the bumper and the ball bolts to that. I would not try it on any other generation Ram...too heavy.

About the only thing you can tow on your bumper is a Lawn Mower. The 4th gens have a crossmember that goes from frame rail to frame rail under the bumper and is welded at each end where it meets the frame. Your bumper is simply bolted onto the end of the frame rails.

Mine:

To be honest, I am not even sure how much weight mine can carry on the bumper...but 3200lbs of car on a trailer would be pushing it I think with mine. Let alone an older gen.

You won't be able to do it with the bumper but a good Class IV receiver hitch you can do it.

That crossmember is actually your hitch I believe your are supposed to be able to bolt something like this to it

you can, but the ball on the bumper actually would go through it, essentially negating the need, except for the height issue.

I personally wouldn't trust a bumper hitch for anything but moving something around in your driveway. you can buy the whole set up for your truck for around 150-250 depending what class you want and takes about an hour or Uhaul will do it for 300+. if you try it I would go for the dolly they don't weigh that much, a trailer capable of holding a car is probabaly gonna weigh about 2000 lbs by itself. then there is the height issue bumper being to high. now the weight depending on how you position the car on the trailer is going to raise or lower the back of the truck to high or to low that thing is going to sway all over the place putting that much more stress on the bumper. if your only gonna do it 1 time it may be alright but I would say its a gamble thats alot of weight for a bumper hitch. good luck!

Also, just to note, that uhaul will usually look at your vehicle and tell you if you can or can not use their dolly.
