There's a really nice late model lightning in my neighborhood, it is definitely modified it has a very lopey idle and sounds great. I should go talk to the guy, it's a sweet truck.
The 99-00 models did have a problem blowing spark plugs out of the heads due to too few threads in the casting. And the Lightnings didn't have any forged internals like the 03-04 Cobra did, so they are limited. A lot of the problem is that they are capable of making big power relatively easily, so people expect them to be able to hold up. But on the bright side, the 2 valve 5.4 is very cheap to rebuild and can be made bulletproof. There is even a 6.2 replacement engine that bolts right in. Throw a Kenne Bell or Whipple on top of that and do work.
