Default 2006 4.7L vs. 2007 4.7L (What changed?)

Looking around I found that although my engine is very similar, there is a difference between the 2006 power output and the 2008. After viewing the page below I found that the 4.7L got its compression bumped up in 2008 by (.3):1. So the compression went from:

2006 - 9.5:1
2008 - 9.8:1

My question is; What changed? Just 8 new pistons? Possibly a camshaft? A new tune to go with the pistons?

4.7L Comparison

Any help would be appreciated

Not much changed, HP/TQ numbers are the same. It wasnt until 2008 that the Numbers increased to 310/330 respectively.

Sorry, the title is mistaken. I meant to say 2006 vs 2008.

Pretty sure it was just a set of pistons and a tune, coupled with different materials and manufacturing techniques. Pushrod V8's are going the way of the Dodo very quickly.

slight compression increase, I believe the new 4.7L uses the same cams as the old HO 4.7L, but not sure on that. Also different head design, better flow, maybe different combustion chambers? I think pistons may have stayed the same but the combustion chambers changed that's why change in compression. Also, new 4.7L has two plugs per cylinder, old only had 1. Both 4.7L engines are overhead cam engines, no pushrods. I assume some is tuning as well. The new 4.7L is very similarly designed to the hemi (both engines are not true hemi's, FYI), but are close. With the exception of the 4.7 being overhead cam, and the 5.7 being pushrod, they are quite similar engines.

Read this:
http://www.allpar.com/mopar/47.html
http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/200...t-a-semi-hemi/

Only bad thing is I recently heard they will soon be discontinuing the 4.7L (just as it was getting really good). But I don't know the validity of my source...

New heads with a different combustion chamber shape (slant/squish instead of semi-hemi), higher compression pistons, dual spark plugs ala the 5.7 Hemi, and interestingly enough, back to old-school forged connecting rods instead of press-sintered cracked-cap connecting rods. And of course new software to make it all put out 310 ponies.

Frankly, I was surprised that they invested in updating the 4.7 since its all alone in the Chrysler engine lineup. Its the only SOHC Chrysler v8 and the only other engine it shares ANY parts with is the 3.7 v6, whereas the pushrod family has 2 v8 members (5.7 and "392.") I'd almost expected them to come out with a smaller version of the Hemi in the 5-liter range instead so they could share parts. Its good because its always been a great engine and can go toe-to-toe with the larger GM 5.3L LS-series v8. GM and Chrysler have both proven that the whole pushrod vs. SOHC debate is silly- the GM LS series and the Chrysler Hemis put out the same power as Ford can do with its SOHC Modular v8s, so its just a matter of choice.

I really appreciate all the information. I didn't see anything about the head, plugs, cams, or chambers online. Maybe I wasn't digging deep enough. Since it seems turning a 2006 to a 2008 is more work than its worth, I might just go ahead and trade up my Dodge. Too bad, because I kinda love my 2006 4.7L. But I need more power to haul my trailer in the future. Time to find my dream HEMI Ram.

Thanks everyone!

There's always the option of a performance tune for the engine computer with something like a DiabloSport tuner. It might not quite get you to the 2008-up ratings, but it'll get you quite a bit, especially if combined with exhaust and intake improvements. Search around the forum for more info.

It also comes down to the tranny and rear differential being able to handle the load. As far as towing goes, this engine is lacking a bit. Even if I increase the power, I cant be sure the rest of the drivetrain can handle it.

I have another posting up in the towing section of the 3rd gen rams. Im trying to learn if the truck can haul a 3600lbs with 1500lbs of cargo inside. If this truck can do that comfortably then I have nothing to worry about
