Default 4 wheel drive engagement

1998 Ram 2500 4x4 with cummins.

Working on 4 wheel drive. Vacuum correct pressures at Axle shift motor. Removed motor, cleaned and checked shift folk for binding. Looked ok. Checked travel of shift motor shaft, again looked like it was ok. This is where I think the problem is. I could not move the shift colar over the intermediate shaft, from the passenger side axle shaft. It appeared to me to be a little lower. With the aid of a small pry bar, I lifted the passenger side axle shaft up, turned the passenger wheel a bit and the shift collar slide on without any trouble. Four wheel drive engaged and all wheels turned. Put everything back together and once on the ground, again could not engage the four wheel drive. I feel for sure the passenger side shaft being lower is my problem.

Has anyone else had this problem. I do not see any bearing or bushing that would hold the shaft in place.

Lastly, the passenger side wheel bearing recently went bad and I replace it. The four wheel would not engage prior to replacing the bearing.

Any help appreciated. Thanks

im currently working on mine as i type with greasy fingers, there is a bearing holding the intermediate axle shaft. mine has gone out and i pulled the metal shards left of it out. go to quad4x4.com they have a polyurethane bushing i bought for 14bucks that is a replacement for the ball bearing. this way instead of the mud ruining the bearing the poly bearing will not be affected. my only problem now is i cant get the shaft disconnected from the diff. when i do ill let you know. so far this is relatively easy, im about an hour into it and two beers so id say so far an intermediate project.

Try getting a pry bar or tire iron between the u joint and the rear yolk to pop it loose.
