Default Radio Help please...

I know what I am doing when it comes to installing a stereo in a car and making it sound like stock or a little better and look good. The problem is that is not exactly what I am wanting to do with my truck. For starters it is a 96 ext cab 1500 4X4. The current radio will work for a while then quit. The next time you get it in it may or may not work, if it does it will only be for a short while. It is not a stock unit and I have not had it out to see how bad the wiring was hacked to get it in.
What I want to do is 1st find a good, dependable head unit that can run a remote CD changer and has the preouts for a small amp. 2nd, the amp, not real big, just enough to give some thump through 8's at the most. Then I want to replace the factory speakers and there wiring.
I have not dealt with new installations for a while and will need to learn about the new stuff. But I trust you folks here. So what do you recommend? Shaun

For most small systems, stock vehicle wiring is more than adequate. What is your budget and listening style/habits?

Listening habits depend on who is with me and what mood I am in so it may be everything from classical to rock. Looking for a good true sound. As far as budget, I have learned that you get what you pay for so if I have to save my pennies for a bit to get a good one then so be it. Thank You, Shaun
