I question whether it's legal though. Does anybody know if it would be illegal to do this modification?
I'd hate to see the seat be able to flip forward in a crash, especially when there is a passenger sitting in the seat! Insurance companies would have a hay-day with this one.

I'd like to do the mod...if it's safe and legal to do so.
blackpearldodge,

Answers to "Safe and/or Legal?"

Safe? Yes. You're not changing the anchor points on the seatbelts. Regardless of the seat's movement behind you during a crash, as long as the seatbelt is in front of you and is still anchored to the chassis, you're good to go (or not to go in the case of a crash).

Legal? I don't see why not. I'm a Police Officer and a bit of an inspection regulation guru. I'm also certified in child seat installation, so seatbelts are a bit of a specialty to me. Again, as far as inspection regulations go (at least in PA), seatbelts that are securely anchored to the chassis (or other engineered strong point) are fine. I see no problem with this mod (not to mention its pretty damn cool, and I'll be doing it as well!).

^I agree with sdrexel on that. When I was in HS I drove an 81 F100, it came from the factory with seat belts but without headrests(bench seat). I put bucket seats in it with a home made center console that housed subwoofers. I anchored the box through the cab floor to a crossmember(frame) and the seat belt was still useable. I got pulled over once with someone sitting on the box and the cop asked me if I thought that was safe and I explained how I had it set up and he agreed that it was safe and legal. He commented also though that if it would have been a newer vehicle(with head rests) that it would have needed a head rest as well... Seemed like common sense to me.

You guys are beating this thing to death. The seat CANNOT possibly move if the seatbelt is fastened to the passenger. The restraint system is fastened to the truck body and has absolutely NO CONNECTION to the seat itself.

I have a 2011 Ram 1500 and I did this mod. It works great! I had to go more than 1/2" though. The 1/2" wouldn't allow the seat to bring the hook all of the way up so it would lay forward. I also had to buy longer bolts. Fyi, the bolts are 12mm x 1.75. Once I got the right Height, it works with no problems.

I still have room for more stuff too. You can put so many things back there. It's brilliant. There is useful space back there, why not?

I'd really love to see a few pics of the Fox Acoustics spacers. I don't like that they are MDF, but they'd be great templates for someone in a machine shop and some aluminum (hint hint - BT ).
