Default To those who have done a 2/4 drop

Thinking about doing a 2/4 drop and was wondering if it would be possible for me to just buy torsion keys and do the rear flip without the kit. I can go out and get longer U-bolts and new shocks if that is all i need. Do i need new shocks? Is there anything im overlooking with the front suspension? Do i need to relocate rear shock mounts, will stock shackles with a flip give me 4"?
Pics of any parts metioned would help alot thanks.

Dalton,

unfortunately, this will not work. If your truck is 2wd, the front needs either drop coils or drop spindles. a torsion key will not work. As for the rear, flipping the axle while using stock shackles will give you a 6 inch drop, and you'll be hitting your frame rails unless you c-notch it (trust me, been there, done that). also, the flip kit I bought comes with a piece that creates a flat surface between the axle and the leafs. i know this is all bad news to you, but I'd hate for you to tear apart your truck just to find out these problems.

What you can do is this: 2" drop shackles from McGaughys and removal of overload leaf in your spring pack. it will get you close to 4" in the back and only cost about $75 (from timssuspensiononline). The bad news is that the truck will sag real bad with any load in it, and your tires will buzz your fenders, so some cutting and rolling of the fenders will be needed to keep your tires safe from the fender (I also made this mistake a ruined a set of rear tires).

Hope this helps, and let me know if you have any other questions, I've been around the block with 3rd gen suspension...

This is extremely important, otherwise the axle can "twist" under load. I worked with a guy that flipped his mini truck axle and leafs like you are saying and after only a couple of days of driving he ended up twisting the axle (relative to the springs) and it pulled the driveshaft out and broke the u joint and alot of other damage. It happened when he accelerated hard onto the freeway.

Flip kit w/ stock shackles is 6"..... The 4" flip is done w/ 2" lift shackles.

Buy a 2" drop spring and flip w/ 2" lift shackles. Should be about $300. The thing is when you get near that money you may as well buy a kit for $400 and get all the matched components, and the little things you may need like shock extenders mounting plates for the flip, etc etc
I saved and did mine once, did it right, and dont regret waiting longer at all. Its safe and its strong. Look at McGaughys 2/4"....they have an economy drop that may fit the bill.
