Thats what I was trying. I had it has loose as I could make it without worrying about it falling off the screw and I can get the thing about half way in the hole but I can't get the entire thing in because the big circle part hits the tailgate. It says in the instructions that different pain thicknesses might make it a tight fit but this is ridiculous...

EDIT:
I just went back out there fresh and tried all sorts of angles and even took that piece off and tried to put it in backwards. Either I just have WAY to much paint in my hole or the metal piece it to long because that back part wont even fit straight in like I assume it should. It VERY close and I am tempted to take a hammer to it just to tap it in but I worry I might mess something up. What size hex screw do I need to take that panel off of the top of my tailgate?

The hole on my truck looks to be about 1/2" long... Is that about right? I'm trying to figure out if the hole is small or the nut is to big for my kit!

My oval hole on the drivers side is 1/2" long and the piece that slides in measures .55" long. Slightly longer than opening but still fits when Going in at angle.

I got the kit from Rock Auto and had no problem installing it. It doesn't slow the gate as much as I expected but does prevent the slamming my daughter was doing loading her color guard gear in to the back. It's on the truck and it works so I'm keeping it instead to trying to send it back to Rock Auto

Mine arrived today from steve white motors - they sell the EZ down on ebay $52.45 delivered. It is the EZ down kit and has a mopar part #
1-VEZD0001AA. My truck is an 2011 The listing is for 2002-2008.
The instructions say 2002-present. It fit fine - works great.
I have the oval hole as shown in previous post. When you get the nut in
there rotate it 90 degrees while slightly pulling out , then tighten. The nut
in this kit is oblong so it won't pull out once rotated and tightened, I also
added some heat shrink tubing to the factory cable as it slightly rubs the
bed.

Today I got a chance to take the kit back to O'Reillys. While I was in there I asked if I could compare the one I bought to another one with the same part number. Now, the instructions in my kit said 2002 to present Dodge Ram 1500.... The instructions in the other package with the same exact part number said it was for F150s! Someone screwed up and leave it to me to drive an hour away from my house to buy what was probably the only mispackaged tailgate damper to ever make it to a stores shelf...

Anyway, I am now waiting on the mopar damper from amazon which cost me $49 shipped compared to the $30 I spent on the one from O'Reillys. It will be worth it though if the stupid thing actually works!

Where do you guys get the extra heat shrink tubing? I wrapped my safety cable with electric tape for the time being while I had the new bolt on there since I also noticed that it was rubbing.

you just use amazon as a portal to order the parts, they don't actually sell them

the ez down is sold by STEVE WHITE MOTORS, who have yet to ship mine as well
