Default Delster4x4 2011 Build Thread

Been on the forums for a long time searching for answers, found most of them here. What a great forum for people who want to work on their own trucks customizing them their way. Great people too, pages full of information just being passed around.

I haven't posted a whole lot but since I will be starting to work on my third Ram I figured I'd start a thread for whoever wanted to see. For anyone that is not a mechanic like me and can do limited mods myself this is a great forum and the feedback is awesome.

I started out with a '99 Ram, went to a '08 now I am on to make this 2011 Big Horn look like one of a kind. I've posted a picture of first two and can list the mods on them if anyone is interested. I don't have a ton of pictures because I haven't been much of a poster but that will change and I will chronicle the challenges of the new truck. Thanks everyone, hope you enjoy.

Third brake light leak fixed

It rained pretty hard today, went out to check and see if water was leaking inside.. Had this problem in my '08 and a couple weeks ago found out about the third brake light leak. I didn't fix it on the '08 since I was trading it in. I thought I would get away from these problems with the '11, nope..

It wasn't as much as my 08 but it was enough to make me mad. After it started raining I went out to check, caught it dripping in the passenger side corner of the head liner. Decided to go to Home Depot after work and fix it this time. Granted its probably been leaking for awhile since it is an '11 but I just got it last week.

Bought some epdm weather stripping.

Took off the light and notice what a piece of crap the foam gasket was. I'm sure this isn't a percentage of rams that have the problem but an age of rams. Way to go Dodge. There was a good amount of water inside the housing and even inside the bulbs from just an hour or two of rain.

You can see where the water was going, there was some left inside the cab. That white piece of tape is the top of the headliner.

Its a pretty easy fix. I didn't like the seal when I put it on so I took it off again and added some more stripping. It is only 1/8" and pretty soft. I have a feeling I might be doing this again and I will be getting a some a little thicker. I left the bottoms open in case any water got in, I'd seen this on another post.

Putco Bed Rails

Picked up a couple chrome bed rails last week from a local guy for $25 without mounting hardware. I originally went to get a black powder coated set from him but they ended up being an inch or two too short.

I figured I could buy hardware that would work. After several trips to different hardware stores and an hour each time looking I decided just to cut some 1"x3" strips of metal and thread them myself to 5/16 and use allen bolt.

It was pretty easy once I got them cut and threaded. I will probably take them and get them powder coated since I'm not a fan of SS or chrome.

Now to get a few things off my chest. I'm pissed that Dodge built a truck with holes in the top of the bed rail to attach a "plastic" cover to. This is ridiculous. Second why not punch both stake pockets?? I had to get a gyp knife out and make my own holes, how stupid is that??

I also put my chest toolbox back in from my last truck. Just a little shy of even with the rails because sooner or later I will have a LoPro QT or Revolution tonneau cover.

Stubby Antenna

I think these shorter antennas look great on our trucks so I bought one earlier this week. I bought an AntennaX Offroad (13") from Amazon for $30 to the door. Here is the link:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I got it today and installed it, I like it. I listen to both the radio and satellite. I hope the reception is still ok. I read on other post that radio reception really drops on anything lower than 12". I really wanted to get an arrow antenna but it was just below the line where I think its a bit too much, IMO. I think they are awesome I just couldn't do it. Here is a before and after, I haven't tried the radio yet. The plastic base on the antenna mount is pretty weathered, I will probably be plasti-dipping it. WARNING: don't unscrew the nut below the antenna, just the antenna itself. I unscrewed both and had to take the wheel well out to get it back up to the mounting location. I should have known better before I did it.. Let me know what you think.

Turns out the 13" antenna works great. I also plasti coated the faded black plastic mounting hardware.

Default Lowered Lock knobs

Lowered Locking Knobs

Decided to lower the lock knobs on the door sill today. On my 3rd Gen they were recessed so when you were resting your arm on the window opening it wasn't sticking in your arm. All I did was removed the door panel. By the way I'm not impressed with Dodge's attempt at cutting cost by having these plastic push rivets hold the door in. Although it makes taking the door panel off a breeze I don't see how the integrity of these will hold up, I'd rather have screws.

After taking the door panel off, pop out the trim around the door handle. You can put this back on after everything is put back together. Taking this trim off makes test fitting and reinstalling the door panel very easy. The next thing I did was screw off the door lock knobs and drilled them a half inch deeper with a 5/32 bit. After that all you have to do is screw the knobs down all the way and there you have it. Flush door locking knobs. I only did it to the front since the rear doors have them forward on the door. Took me all of a half hour.

Default Debagged

Debagged

Debagged the truck a few days ago. I'm trying to get rid of all the plastic chrome and other metal chrome on the truck, I don't like it. The tailgate emblem had to stay since it is recessed so I pulled it off, plasti coated it and put it back on.

LOL, it's all good man. What you did with your locking knobs was a pretty slick idea. I'm going to have to try that out myself. You're right about the antenna, too. My whip was one of the first things to get changed out on my truck. Stubbies all the way!
