Default Buying USED or NEW 2011?

Greetings,

I have had the privilege of reading countless threads (sometimes well past my bed time) on your wonderful forum . I am now in the market for a new truck to replace my faithful 2004 Envoy XUV (I need more of a bed for carrying stuff).

8 or 9 years ago, I own a used 4 door Dakota with the 5.9 and a matching Leer cap. I loved everything about the truck except the gas mileage (10 to 13 mpg). The gas mileage eventually led me to sell my Dakota and buy the Envoy. Now I'm ready to return to my Mopar roots (but to a Ram this time).

So far I'm finding 15 to 18% off of MSRP on a moderately equipped 4x4 QUAD ($35000 MSRP) nets me about $5,000 to $6000 off.

I've also recently found an estate sale on a 10 month old 2011 "Sport" QUAD 4x4 with a Leer cap that has a whopping 5,000 miles on it. That sticker was MSRP @ $38,500. The estate is asking $28,500...

Thoughts or suggestions welcomed...

28,500 is a pretty good price for a 2011 Sport. So I would go with the sport since it comes with more options and will be a little bit cheaper.

many have posted that same discount , 10 grand off sticker when buying new.
if you are unable to find that type of deal on a new one then the estate sale is the way to go. if you are financing, check out the interest rates on both new and used, may find if there is enough of a difference in the rates, payment might be lower on a new truck vs used. good luck

Hi and a warm Carolina welcome to the best RAM ForumZ on the web. How about posting a few photos of your truck when you get it? I think the used deal sounds pretty good but that the finance costs might be lower on a new truck.

It's all about what you're willing to spend really. I would never pay over $20k for any vehicle, just because that's alot of money to me for a vehicle, but I know they can be worth more than that. I bought my 2010 used (9 months old) for under $20,000, it's a 4.7L slt quad cab. I looked at the same truck on the lot in the new category I think it's sticker was like $33 or $35k or something like that, and I was able to get them down to around $28k, no less. For the $8k I saved I was really happy, the truck was almost perfect condition. Only thing I didn't get that I wanted was the hemi, but I don't regret that, the 4.7L with some mods is plenty for me. The truck came with countless options that I don't use nor really even wanted (carpet, heated mirrors, auto everything, bluetooth, etc...) With all this stuff you'd think there'd be a rear window defroster... I always buy used and just really inspect what I'm buying, drive it a good while (vehicles can have issues that won't show when cold, but once at operating temp will show). Only thing that could get me to buy new is if the warranty was worth it, but I take such good care of my vehicles and would rather do all maintenance and repairs myself I don't go that route.

Thanks for everybody's advice.

Historically, I almost always buy used. I usually target 18 to 24 month old vehicles as the depreciation has usually plateaued by then. However in today's market place, used vehicles seem to be more expensive compared to a lot of brand new ones.

The estate truck is not my favorite color (Cherry Red) and it's missing heated seats but for the right price, I can learn to love almost anything I also really want a cap, so that would save me (I'm guessing $1500).

Has anyone added heated seats? How much would that run?

The estate sale would be hard to pass up, and I have to agree, the depreciation hit wouldn't be as bad as with a brand new truck and if it were me and I went that route, I would put as much money down on it as possible so as to minimize the financing and get closer to having it paid for. True, it's almost easier to finance a new vehicle and I've done both. Another thing to consider is whether or not a warranty is important but good luck and be sure to keep us posted.

I've noticed on single cab trucks you can get REALLY good deals new, my dad paid like $16k for his out the door brand new in 2005 (employee pricing plus other incentives), the other truck he was looking at was a one year old silverado that was like $4k more expensive...Also my brother bought his 2009 ram single cab for like $17k out the door brand new with lifetime warranty... But I've noticed with the higher trim levels you can't get as good of deals new... Just because it stickers at $35k or $40k and you get $10k off the sticker, is it still really worth that much? Just my opinion, but I don't think any vehicle is worth over $30k.....OK maybe a diesel truck or a vette... In 5-10 years they're all worth about the same, nothing...and I don't know how some people buy new cars every few years, they must be backwards on their cars constantly! My friend bought a 2001 car in 2005 and is still paying on it ($50/mnth payments), he'll probably end up paying like $20k + for his $12k dollar car. Alot of people will get you with 6 yrs of payments now also so watch for that.

Just a couple of points:

First, some here seem to be implying that you wouldn't have any warranty on the used one, but if it's only 10 months old with 5K miles, the basic factory warranties should transfer to you. If there was any kind of extended warranty on it, that would also MOST LIKELY be transferrable, but you'd have to read the fine print.

Second, I don't know what the sales tax situation is where you live, but in Wisconsin, if you trade in a vehicle on a new purchase, you only have to pay sales tax on the difference. So, at our 5% rate, if the Envoy was worth 10K, you'd save $500 on the sales tax. There's no such break or tax rebate on the used one if you sell it yourself. Again, depending on if you trade and the value of the trade, that difference is enough in some cases to make a new one a better deal.

Good points ^^. My certified pre owned warranty is good through 60,000 miles I believe (powertrain). I don't remember how many years, I want to say 3 or 5. Isn't that better than the factory warranty, with the exception that it's not bumper to bumper? As for the tax savings, to me it doesn't pay off, you save $500 by spending maybe another $5k - $10k? You sound like my wife, "but it was on sale!" ...just sayin... lol
