Question Loud grinding noise from driverside - VIDEO INSIDE

2001 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9 4x4

Vehicle runs great, and previously drove fine until yesterday. Slowly throughout the day I notice a slight noise outside the vehicle while driving, it would come and go and did not effect driving. Then about a block before my house the vehicle slightly skids as if I was applying the brakes rapidly, so I pull over and notice Ive lost most of my brake pressure and as I attempt to continue to drive I get a LOUD METAL ON METAL grinding noise from the front drive side area. It grew progressively worse as I continued. As I would accelerate I could see the drive side tire shake back and forth as if not being connected completely. I parked it on the street, and decided to come back in the morning to inspect. I pulled the tire off and my brake rotor was very loose in the caliper, along with what looks like strips of metal on the inside of the hub where the axle connects. Pieces of the wheels bearing were also on the ground.

Im not a mechanic by any means, but I do plan to diagnose and fix this myself. Is this simply a wheel bearing or an entire hub issue? Any suggestions are appreciated on what to buy and how to make the repair!

It doesn't look very pretty. Axel and hub by my guess.

Hi and a warm Carolina welcome to the best RAM ForumZ on the web. How about posting a few photos of your truck? (not just the broken part) I'm here to point you over to our Newbie Checkin and get you to introduce yourself to the rest of the group.

Any idea on cost of an axel and hub? Would you say driving it the rest of the way home would be a risk at further damage or has the damage been done and I may as well limp it home? It about 2 football fields from my house, doesnt seem worth an 80.00 tow.

No pictures at this time, but once she's fixed and home Ill clean it up and post up some photos.

If you can't get it apart you're right it probably won't be too much worse. I'd try to get the part at a reputable salvage yard. I did that for my daughters car. It wouldn't drive after she hit a tree. Not sure what to tell you cost would be. I spent about $150 for her axle and hub assembly with a new bearing.

yup got a tow for 65.00. Probably start ripping it apart tomorrow. All of the bearings from the wheel bearing fell out as the truck was lowered into my driveway. Definitly gonna need a new wheel bearing. Hoping the axle isnt shot.

I will post more pictures as I take it apart.
