2001 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9 4x4
Vehicle runs great, and previously drove fine until yesterday. Slowly throughout the day I notice a slight noise outside the vehicle while driving, it would come and go and did not effect driving. Then about a block before my house the vehicle slightly skids as if I was applying the brakes rapidly, so I pull over and notice Ive lost most of my brake pressure and as I attempt to continue to drive I get a LOUD METAL ON METAL grinding noise from the front drive side area. It grew progressively worse as I continued. As I would accelerate I could see the drive side tire shake back and forth as if not being connected completely. I parked it on the street, and decided to come back in the morning to inspect. I pulled the tire off and my brake rotor was very loose in the caliper, along with what looks like strips of metal on the inside of the hub where the axle connects. Pieces of the wheels bearing were also on the ground.
Im not a mechanic by any means, but I do plan to diagnose and fix this myself. Is this simply a wheel bearing or an entire hub issue? Any suggestions are appreciated on what to buy and how to make the repair!
