Default Goy 17.97 on 1st MPG check

Purchased a brand new Ram 1500 Tradesman, with a 5.7 Hemi, on 9/15/11. Dealer had filled the gas tank. Went through this first tank and didn't pay any attention to MPG.

9/25/11 was "my" first fill up. I was pretty meticulous. After filling up with 89 octane at the gas station, when I got home, I started adding more gas to bring it right up to the brim. This takes over an hour as I had to add a little a time and let the gas tank equalize the pressure. Checked it the next morning to make sure it hadn't gone done any.

10/7/11 Filled up at the gas station (this time with premium, 93 octane), and added more gas when I got home to bring it right up the the brim again, which took over an hour again. I was extremely meticulous again and measured right down to the ounce.

My truck doesn't have that gizzmo that indicates MPG, so I had to calculate it by hand.

Total miles on the truck = 1250
Total miles driven this tank of gas = 619
Total gas used = 34.44 gallons
MPG = 17.97

All my driving is highway, with some gently rolling hills. I set the cruise control at 55 MPH. "ECO" light is "ON" 95% of the time.

Curious to see what MPG will be on Premium gas (no ethanol).

I hope that over time I get up to that 20 MPG figure that Ram throws out for the 5.7 Hemi.

Update: I just found out in another post that I wasn't suppose to top off the tank like I did twice so far. Poster stated:

"If you go past the "clicking" sound and top off your tank, you are just pumping gas above the point of the charcoal canister valves that recirculate the EGR and fuel vapors. When it clicks - stop and save yourself the $100+ diag charge for the non-warrantable check engine light and the added expense of the parts you just saturated with fuel."

I hope I didn't screw something up in my brand new truck ! ! !

Wind and terrain have a big impact on mine. The trick is getting to the most efficient gear as efficiently as possible. Don't take to long to accelerate.. Popular Mechanics had an article on better mpg several months ago that I found interesting.

I have about 1300 miles , a 3.92 gear ratio, and around 14 in town with 18 on a highway trip. Will a K & N air filter help milage? What about synthetic oil?

Was just going to mention this....I used to completely top off my diesel trucks, but never pollution controlled gas cars.

Oh, and MPG (back on topic) cruise control at 26, the EVIC has been showing 20-21 mpg (2011 5.7 crew 4x4, 3.92 gears).

Third MPG check = 18.02 MPG with 1800 miles on my truck. 5.7 Hemi, 3.55 rear end, regular cab, 8 ft bed. I always use cruise control and try to keep "ECO ON" as much as I can. 98% of my trips are highway. I set the cruise at 60, and let'r roll. I sure hope I get closer to that 20 MPG figure that Ram touts in their ads.

After around 500 miles (just got the truck), I have been around 14.5 (manual calc and computer) and around 18 with majority of freeway.

I amazes me how much better the MPG is on the freeway vs. city. My Tacoma would average about 18mpg no matter how you drove around town, but wouldn't be a whole lot better with more hwy. I am super happy with the truck so far, and it seems like it gets worse mpg than my Tacoma (as expected) but really isn't much worse.

Default My best MPG. 21.28 !

I have a 2011 Ram 1500 Tradesman, regular cab, 8ft (open) bed (no cover), 5.7 hemi, 3.55 rear, 2400 miles in truck. 99% of my driving is highway. I don't have that fancy instrument cluster, so I have to calculate my MPG by hand. I've kept scrupulous records. I've been using 87 Octane with out ethanol. Was getting 17, then 18, then 19, and now when I filled up today, 21.28 MPG! My little 2001 Toyota Tacoma only got 22 MPG. I drive my Ram like an old fart (probably because I am an old fart at 66). Hey ! Us old farts gotta stick together !

Luv my Ram and this forum !

I have a '11 2500... No Eco mode available. Was getting 13/18 but after the dealer replaced my serpentine belt, at 7500 miles, I now get 12-13 city, 10 highway... TEN!! Something is wrong. And that's at 65-70 miles per hour. Nothing crazy. No racing around. Nothing in the truck other than the system. 200 lbs. so, consider it a passenger...

Grrrrrr.... Love everything else than this poor mpg. And I know it's not a hybrid.
