Default Gas Milege

Hi fellow Ram members,I have a 2000 Ram 1500 Laramie loaded with the 5.2 Magnum Engine.Being new to this truck since I have had it only 4 months but I do love this truck.Bottom line,my average MPG. is 9.3 around the city.I keep it around 2000 RPMS or lower. Is this normal or should I do some mods.I see people are putting Ram intakes(K&N) on their trucks but on a 5.2 Engine would it make much difference?I also see people with bigger exhaust pipes.Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Well several things come to mind. What rear end you running? What size tires are on the truck? Is it a 4x4? Many things can help improve fuel mileage but knowing the answers above can help us point you in the right direction. One last ?? How much $$ are you willing to spend to get those improvements?

I just did not put all the info down on My truck.Yes it is a 4x4 with posi.,As far As the rear end I do not know.Would their be a metal plate on the door telling you what ratio I have? Also the truck came with BF goodrich All Terrain T/As. The size being 285-75-16.Since I am retired I put limited milege on it but I still use it every day.I am willing to put at least a $1000.00 for starters. Thanks for the replys.

Your tire is 32.8" tall. I assume when you went to the taller tire you killed some of your gas mileage. You can bring it back by adding gears. If your truck came stock with 3.55's then 3.90's would probably put you back to a stock feel but I'm a gear man so I'd probably go with 4.10's especially if you don't do a lot of freeway miles.

Thanks for the quick replys.I would try to go with the gearing later. right now I . was thinking about a ram air system, better flow exhaust, wires, plugs. The reason I bought this truck was for towing my boat which weighs 3100 LBS trailer included. The oversize tires came with the truck at the time. The ram air system I was wondering if it is worth it since it is a 5.2Engine.
