Default Death Wobble

I keep hearing about some sort of death wobble when you're driving and basically lose control of the vehicle with the steering wobbling. I checked with the dealer but they only claim that there's a vibration recall of sorts in rare conditions. Has anyone heard anything on this? I has it happen once on the highway where my steering wheel vibrated rapidly back and forth for 5 seconds then stopped. Nothing since. Anyone?

DW seems to occur more often in the 3/4T diesel trucks. I have not heard on many 1/2T with the problem except when a leveling kit has been installed and then the only problem seems to be is when your in 4 wheel drive you get a vibration(sometimes). It can be caused by many many things, front end parts, tie rod ends, tie rods, wheels, tires, improper tire pressure etc etc--basically almost any moving part on the front end. There is not one specific thing that causes it, thus there is not one specific thing that cures it. All trucks seem to be a little different. Sorry I can't be of more help, cause when it happens it scares the *hit out of you.

There are different threads on this, the most common cure is to get rid of the goodyear tires.

Mine neither! Only heard of it with leveling kits on the 2"plus side.

I haven't heard of a DW problem on stock trucks. All the DW posts I've read are all on lifted or leveled 4x4's 3/4 and 1 ton.

I have a leveled 2500 diesel, haven't had a DW yet. See what happens when I put on 33's

Default death wobble

Having been a Jeep owner for decades I can tell you that Jeeps, especially the XJ have been known for the nortorious death wobble. I can say that anytime I've had it, it was always warped front brake rotors. Even without applying the brakes, at a certain speed it can violently throw your front wheels out of balance (due to a focused resonant frequency) at higher speeds. It can happen during deceleration, or immediately following a brake tap. It is very very scary. I'd recommend checking the rotors, pads, wheel bearings (hubs), and wheel balance.

I've fixed this every time on my Jeeps with new quality brake rotors and pads. If you decide to go with rotors and pads, the best I've found to resist warping and eliminate the death wobble are the Raybestos Advanced Technology rotors.

I have not yet experienced this on my 2010 Ram 1500 with 13K miles. If I did, the first items I'd change after checking the front end (including the tires) for obvious wear would be the rotors and pads, even if they look good. I've had rotors go bad and start causing the death wobble before 5K miles on new rotors, especially with so many cheap ones available. Spend a little more and get the Raybestos Advance Technology. I've driven Jeeps for over 350K miles, so I've been through the wringer with this.

A simple test would be to swap your front wheels with the rears and see if it goes away. If not, and everything on your front end checks out good, then new quality front rotors and pads. Don't get your old rotors cut !

If you wander over to the Jeep forums you'll find these guys over the years changing ball joints, bushing, steering components, drive shafts, universals, yokes, transmissions, torque converters, tires, rims, hubs, front axles, steering boxes, and everything else to find their death wobble not fixed..... except brake rotors because they look good or were replaced not too long ago.

I hope this information is helpful.

Good luck, Best Regards !

I had the DW twice on my old '03 2500 Ram doublecab at 22k miles. The truck was stock. I was running @ 70mph on a local highway and as I crossed a bridge the truck just started shaking like a MF'er. As soon as I tapped the brakes, it stopped shaking. The tires were premium Bridgestones too. Two months later I traded her in.

I have been wondering if this recent recall for tie-rods was somehow associated with the dreaded "death wobble"....
