Default wont go over 70?

last night i wast on the highway and i got on it it would climb to 70 then wouldnt accelerate past 70... the rpms went close to redline like it usually does with the pedal to the floor but would stop instead of shifting...?

also i tried with overdrive off and overdrive on did same thing regardless.

Well you're going to need to rebuild the transmission, but first try adjusting the bands. If it still won't go past 70 then it's time for a rebuild. Obviously the transmission isn't shifting into high gear, it won't go into overdrive most probably because the OD is burnt out as OD units will die before the transmission itself does. Now the reason I say adjust the bands is because mainly the kickdown band which activates thus down shifting you this ways you don't burn out high gear, so it's probably in need of an adjustment, if 2nd gear is gone it won't go to third if third if gone then it won't go to 4th. Try running the truck in 2nd gear first keep and eye on the tach. If still nothing then go ahead and have the transmission serviced they are probably going to tell you that it's due for rebuild. Next time use valvoline also.

How many miles on your truck? I had a friend with a similar issue and the problem was clogged catolytic converters. He did a replacement high flow set and found power he never had before.

I am going to have to disagree with you on this, if you are familiar with reading transmission power charts. But anyways the fact that he is redline is telling me his transmission isn't going into high gear also the fact that when you accelerate at higher speeds the transmission will downshift to a lower gear because you would damage high gear at high rpm. So if he is almost red line when accelerating then it's not kicking into high gear to cruise at low rpm. Trust me it's a transmission problem. Especially since it's an older vehicle I know the familiar issues with the older 46-48 issues.
