Default Did I just buy a pretty boy go to the grocery store truck?

My old GMC 3/4 ton 454 truck finally gave up the ghost after 28 years of faithful service.
Now I have this little puny 318 engine with a tiny toy like looking transmission and little tires that claims to be a 3/4 ton truck.
What do you think is going to happen when I put my 800 pound dump box on the truck and then load it up with another 800 pounds or more and drive it all over town?
I am also pulling a small 4 by 8 trailer with my lawn equipment in it.
Will I burn up the automatictransmission?
Did I screw up and buy too light of a truck?
Or is this one tough Hell of a truck and I am not giving it due credit.
I will always be on 35 mph roads.

I could be wrong but I dont think the 2500's ever came with the 318. It should have a 360 or a cummins.

Welcome to the forum.

You sure you have the 318 and not the 360?

1600 pounds is not over the top for the 2500 but it's probably over max carrying capacity or GVWR when you consider tow load, fuel and passengers.

The tires...well, they are small but that's easily fixed with a larger tire. I'd suggest at least 10 ply for the loads you are haulin'.

Well I cannot speak for a 96 but I had a 79 3/4 ton with a 318, 727 trans, and a dana 60 with 4.10s and would load it with a ton no problem. I didn't have a prob even at highway speeds. So if you do in fact have the little 318 it will get the job done.

Yes, 318=5.2 liter.
I am also going to get air bag helpers that go on the leaf springs.
And 10 ply if these tires are to soft.
The thing is that I only drive 2,000 miles a year for I have a very tight route so that helps too.
