Default Must obtain more MPG!

I'm happy with my new beast, but fuel costs are already eating me alive. I have exhaust parts on the way and as soon as those clear the bank, an intake as well.

What else can I do to get more than 15mpg? Is that amount of consumption even normal for an '06 EZB 5.7 on the highway? I've done some poking around but I want to make sure I didn't miss any tips or tricks.

I'm figuring on a bed cover as well. I need to squeeze as much mpg as I can, or I'll have to mothball her and pray gas prices come down.

You pretty much are on the right track for better mpg. The thing that will help you out the most in my opinion is a chip for your truck to tune it. I have a 03 with the 4.7 and im only getting 10 so im on the same boat as you. also go through your fuel system and clean it all out

If you do a lot of highway driving just slow down to 60 - 65 and you should see an increase in mileage and you really don't lose that much time. Slow and steady for the best mileage. A tuner may help also.

tell us more about your truck nightshifter. stock everything? gears? wheel size? I noticed i got better mileage when I added a tonneau. I was more into performance and not mileage but realized after all the mods i did that my engine performs so efficiently that i commonly get 20+ mpg's driving conservatively on the highway on my 50 mile daily commute...

Everything seems stock, except for this sticker under the hood about a computer change, which I mean to get pics of and research to see what it means.

I have the Night Runner package with the 20" wheels and the 3.92 rear end:
Code:
DMHP 3.92 Rear Axle Ratio
DRBS Corporate 9.25 LD Rear Axle
DSA Anti-Spin Differential Rear Axle
I guess I need to add a tuner chip to my list as well.

Spent yesterday afternoon installing a hitch and I was worried about the extra weight, especially after bench pressing it 100 times because the !%$#@%# thing wouldn't line up. (Then I realized I was going for the wrong hole) lol

hehe..I changed to a hidden hitch so that I could take it off when not in use. Weight is also a big factor so I removed my rear bumper for a rollpan (along with the hitch)... i also started out with 33" 20's and 3.92 gears and lsd... i have since changed to 17's, 4.56 gears (but stock lsd) and saved more weight and can get my truck up to speed easier (thus, less use of gas)

I've considered the rollpan, but around here too many people want to get right up your rear at the lights and in the parking lots. I've already had a couple dolts see how far they can put the nose of their import under my bumper. That and it really bothers me when they're so close I can't see 'em in any of my mirrors.

Step bars and 2/3 of my exhaust parts arrived today, I'm hoping that new exhaust will help a lot.

Hate it when that happens, tequila is usually involved.

Drive with the ball hitch in your receiver and they will regret getting so close.

As for MPG's, basic maintenance could help too, like checking spark plugs and your air filter. How many miles are on the truck? Are the tires inflated properly? Do you get good road contact patch? What size are your tires?

Depending on how far you drive, what kind of traffic (which sounds stop and go) and how fast can add factors too. If you don't drive far, you could gamble and take out the spare tire and not fill your gas tank up completely, maybe only 1/2-3/4. Have you calculated your mileage on a highway trip of 100 miles or so?

Do your 20" wheels have the factory sized tires or do they have oversized tire on them. Because if they have over sized tires that will impact your mileage. You should be able to do somewhat better than 15 on the highway but speed will have major impact. You won't be getting optimum mileage at 80.
