Default Engine Temp

2005 5.7 Hemi....

I wanted to know if this is normal? when I start my truck (regardless of outside temp) my temp gauge goes to normal operating temp; my experience has always been a gradual increase in engine temp.

Could this be an indication that either my thermostat needs to be replaced? or that I have a bad sensor?

If the engine is cool(like sat for several hours or overnight) and it does this then this is not normal. The gauge should start out reading low then increase. Won't have anything to do with the thermostat, that is purely a mechanical device and separate from the gauge. Would either look into the coolant temperature sensor, gauge could be faulty, or something else electronically like the computer, but is most likely the senor or gauge.

I say it's a bad sensor if the truck shows operating temp at cold startup.

I have seen a few of these sensors go, it could very well be the sensor.
