The 4.7L (especailly 08+ that you have) really isn't under powered. Even the hemi with your setup would feel like a pig. The gearing will help tremendously but you will never get back to how it felt stock, you are still turning 100+ lb wheels/tires on each corner. That's a lot of rotational mass.

You mentioned yours is slow and gets poor mpg. Mine is stock and is "quick" for a big truck, and I get over 20mpg on the hwy. About 16/17 in town. Big wheels/tires really kill performance. Minor mods won't do a whole lot to fix your issue, gears are definitely your best bet. Beyond that I'd suggest looking into a bigger engine and most likely going to a diesel.9
PLUS - ONE! (Except for installing a diesel..)

You'd be surprised what a 4.7L can do, especially with a 5-speed. I have an '02 ram 1500 (yes....the original 4.7L), and although top end isn't really there, the torque from this thing is monsterous! I'll burn all the rubber off my tires just taking off with half throttle! Needless to say, I love the sound of this motor much more than the hemi, and waaay more than the SRT-10. With the right exhaust config, you can make this sucker sound close to an original mopar! I love my 4.7 and I would challenge any HEMI any day! Win or lose, I still love this motor!

Default so far so good

I've had my 2010 4.7L ram for about 3 months now and so far I've been moderately pleased with the performance. going off of the message center mpg, I average about 15 city/ 18hwy. im interested in throwing in a few relatively inexpensive engine upgrades and am wondering if any of you could recommend an air intake system and a throttle body kit. thanks for any help.

Dirty Joe, I'd go with a tuner (I'd recommend superchips, although many are great). On the late model 4.7L the tuner unlocks a ton of power. Superchips has dyno charts showing something like 65lb ft torque increase (max, not peak). I have a superchips flashpaq on my 2010 4.7L and it's great. Where else can you add that much torque for ~$300 and 15 minutes.

Honestly, I wouldn't go with a CAI. There's not enough bang for that much buck, IMHO.
I would get a good filter and maybe do a stock CAI (since technically that's what they all are...) mod to increase air flow. (OP KrazyK has a thread about it here.) Depending on what you use, it would be under $100.
Ram, and Dodge for that matter, have had plenty of time to optimize their air intakes, IMO.
Another one of my opinions-- I'm told I have a lot of those-- is that K&N isn't the way to go.. Yes, they have great air flow as well as a great rep, but because of higher air flow, their filtering isn't as good, meaning their filters are letting in dust and small particulate. Here and also here back my opinion up, if that matters... Since I live in extremely dusty conditions.. I won't be buying K&N. There again, opinion.
And you know what they say about those...
Again, all this is JMO and if you want an air intake, go for it!

As for me, I absolutely love my 4.7L and we have a 5.7L Ram on the 'lot' I can compare it to as well. Silver has done everything I've asked him to do, plus some.

I am Having some paint issues with the shop that performed paint and body repairs this past winter. My rental that the body shop paid for was 2014 5.7 hemi ram. I have a 2005 4.7.
Needless to say, I'm looking to get a new truck.

After owning my '13 for about 18 months, without a doubt I should have gone for the 5.7. Initially I took the 4.7 in hopes that it would be better on fuel, it's terrible on fuel! the 5.7 is not going to be any better but at least it's got some balls and can put a smile on my face while stomping on the pedal! Don't get me wrong, love my truck and don't regret purchasing a Ram, just regret my engine choice. Hell, my coworker in our work cargo savana lugging 30 automotive batteries walked me on the highway - was painful!
