I try to avoid WOT downshifts at all cost
118k with the oem transmission and stock LSD. Just going to prolong the life as long as possible then just get another used oem tranny when it finally goes kaput.
Most of my spirited up shifting is from 0-45 0-55 0-65 0-70.

There seems to be a lot of talk about Sharadon Performance's transmissions. No first hand experience, just read good things about them.

If I had the money I'd get a tranny from atsdiesel.com , my friend Don has a stroked hemi in his Ram and sprays with it...he sand drags ALL the time and goes through 3 trannys/year. ATS builds a 545RFE that he's running now. He loves it and it shifts with no slippage (like the others did)... still on the same tranny..

I've heard the same thing about ATS. LOL Some say their service after the sale really sucks. Goerend is the best diesel trans made but I don't know if they do gas trans. or not. May be worth a call to see if they have any recommendations.
Jay
P.S. I will have to admit when I saw Judy Lily advertise Sharadon transmissions I was a more than a little suspicious of anything they sell. She should have stayed retired!!!!!!!

if i remember correctly
the difference between a 45RFE 5-45RFE transmission is mostly a software change
& that is what they may also do to make the 2012 6 speed auto

the 2012 6 speed transmission in the 1500 is said to have been used in the Gen 4 2500 & 3500 Rams, it didn't say whether it is in the 2 or 4 wheel drives

I found this online, sort of an ask the engineer site
http://www.turbodieselregister.com/t...nsmission.html

more about transmissions
In June 1998, Chrysler introduced the innovative 45RFE in its 1999 WJ Jeep Grand Cherokee. Produced at Chrysler's Indiana Transmission plant in Kokomo, it was paired with the 4.7 L PowerTech V8 engine. The 45 number refers to the torque rating (5) and number of forward gears (4); RFE refers to rear wheel drive application and full electronic controls.

the 545RFE was not much of a change

the new 2011 6 speed still uses the same casing & the designations were
65RFE & 66RFE
a 3rd transmission is the 68RFE
are all explained here
http://www.allpar.com/mopar/transmissions/68RFE.html

I don't have much to do today so i decided to bore all of you

I'm just waiting on next years 8 speed, they won't let me order it yet

If they use the same housing, are they interchangeable? Or they can bolt on but would need PCM changes?

I would only be guessing, but it would seem that they all would bolt up, maybe a torque converter change, & have someone program the software

i would find a 2009 or 2010, 2500 or 3500 model, if i read right, they had the 6 speeds in them

NOTE:
While the 66RFE resembles the 545RFE from the outside, its extension housing and output shaft are shared with the 68RFE. The 66RFE has its torque converter recessed inside the case, while it sticks out of the 68RFE; these differences are noticeable when the transmission is taken out.
All three automatics have a one-piece case, electronic control, two stage hydraulic pump (which shuts the secondary side at higher speeds, for efficiency), and similar valve bodies. They all use three planetary gearsets, three driving clutches, three holding clutches, and an overrunning clutch. The 66 uses some parts derived or taken from the 545 (mainly in the front: torque converter and pump; overdrive, underdrive, and reverse clutches; and valve body), and some derived or taken from the 68 (low/reverse clutches, planetary gearsets, and 2C clutch).

If i had the $$ i would lean towards ATS but for now i will just stick to oem transmissions and driving style.
