Default 408 stroker help?!?

so i potentially want ALLOT of hp outta my truck and so everyone is telling me to toss the 318 and get a 408 stroker engine. A couple questions about it is 1 if i were to purchase a 408 motor i would have to get a new tranny right? 2 if i get a new tranny and the motor, will i have to change anything else like computer, electronics, crank shaft, carb., or anything else because i know if i have a dodge truck and put a chevy motor in it i will have to change everything like i listed above to make it work in my truck and it will end up being a money pit that way. that being said i only would like to buy a motor and tranny nothing else and if i have to change all the things listed above to run the 408 stroker what motor could i run without changing anything but the tranny to get ALLOT of HP PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. what kind of motor is a 408 stroker anyways?

This post seems like a trainwreck in the making.

a 408 is a bored and stroked chevy small block. It can be made using a variety of starter engines. Im sure there is some sort of MOPAR block that could be made into a 408, but usually when refered to people are talking SBC. Trying to get a chevy trans/engine to work in a dodge could be quite a nightmare. It would more than likely take custom motor mounts, trans cross member, driveshaft... the list just keeps going. Also the electrical headache would be a nightmare to get the basic things like your speedo working and everything to run smoothly. Why not sell your truck and move up to a newer Hemi and use that as a better starting point?

If you are speaking about a 408 stroker that is built from one of the "340" blocks you are still in for a lot of work. Chances are none of the electronics are going to work, it will not pass emissions testing or annual inspections if required in your area. Even if this 408 stroker was built out of the more modern 360 your 318 computer will not work. You would essentially have to give up fuel injection, purchase a non-electronic tranny, etc. Now if this is referring to a 408 chevy it belongs in a chevy, ford belongs in ford and dodge belongs in dodge.

A 408 is also a Dodge Magnum block, usually starting out as a 5.9L/360 cu in motor.

With a 408 build the crankshaft get's replaced, as does all the rotating elements in the engine.

You can run your stock transmission as it will bolt up to the proper bell housing for a 5.9L. However, the stock transmission may not hold up forever under the increased torque. A lot of folks will add a transmission cooler if they don't already have one or go with a bigger one if they do. This will extend the transmission life but eventually, you'll end up re-building it. For a bullet proof transmission, ATS, Bowler or Suncoast may be able to help.

The engine management computer or PCM will need to be re-programmed. One of the firms I've used in the past for re-programmed PCM's is B&G Performance.

The fuel system may change but most of that will be up to you. You will need a larger injector in the TBI. Or, you can go to a multi-point system such as is offered by Holley or FAST. You may need a higher pressure fuel pump or a booster pump added to your existing system. Lastly, you can always convert to a carb.

The intake manifold will change. A good aftermarket unit is recommended. Edelbrock makes a nice one for that engine that a lot of builders recommend.

A few other tweaks or mods are needed in the electrical wiring area for the booster fuel pump, injectors if you go that route, etc...but it is certainly doable.

Cost? It ain't cheap....I decided not to sink 5 figures into my '99 but it sure did tempt me for a while!

I also read in a article about stroking a engine out that the oil pump needs to be swapped to a high volume one. And another ram on here just recently posted about his blown and stroked 360 magnum block. Hes pushing 500 horsies...but it was not cheap, he got it tuned and all the work together was pricey...he told me the prices but I dont feel right telling something thats not mine to tell, but if you asked him im sure hed tell ya and could prob give ya lots of info on stroking. look up stroked and blown in a search and you should be able to find it. but any how I think maddog has put you on the right track

Yeah not cheap! If you did that, you'd wanna make sure to upgrade your suspension, as well as probaly some different gears, and I would put in some gauges to monitor everything!
