Angry RKE so Expensive!!!

bought a used 2009 RAM, got only 1 of the special "keys" - went to Dodge dealer to see about a 2nd key : $150 + $75 for programming!!!!!!

What a rip off! There MAY be as much as $5 worth of electronics in the key, but I doubt it is that much, even if they are spec'd to "Automotive" grade/temperature range. Add $1 for plastic, another $1 for battery, and Dodge is marking up about 20X. This is NOT the way to create happy customers, but IS a blatant rip-off, I actually feel insulted!

I see "refurbished" keys available on internet for ~ $75 -- anybody have success with these? Can the keys be programmed at another dealer (Chevrolet for instance)??

Every manufacture is like that. I had to get keys for my old mustang and it was about $300 for 2. I doubt chevy could program a ram key because the codes are different, plus chevy would charge about the same

I think that there is a means of you doing the programming yourself (but I'm not sure).

I think it has something to do with the "key dance". Check you owner's manual, if it's possible you might be able to save a few bucks

good luck

Yeah, I don't think Chevy could do it either, but if they could I could get the programming for free 'cause I bought the car (used) there, then buy a refurb on eBay for $75 and it's $75 vs $250 at dealer

do a Google search on the key, this one link i found really quick.... http://www.autotransponder.com/2009_..._entry_remotes.

there are instructions in the owners manual to program a 2nd key. maybe check the service manual they have posted at the start page of this section

They could program it, but a dodge dealer has to do the code to your truck. Maybe talk to the chevy dealer and see if they'll pay for the key from dodge

Living dangerously with just one key... if you lose it somewhere you will have to have your truck towed to the nearest Dodge dealership because there is no way Dodge can get you another key programmed until you get to the dealership (believe me I know from experience) I thought I would be able to just go in and give them my vin number and they could fix me up ...nope, truck has to be at a dealership

This is one of the issues with new technology but I would not have accepted it with one key, especially from dealer, I asked the price of a key here but was told the programming is included in thekey price. I didn't bother to go to parts since I was on the phone already 15 minutes.
