Default Struts leaking on 09 already.

Been seeing some leaking shocks/struts problems on 05-08 rams. My driverside front shocks is leaking on my 2009 ram 1500 4x4. I've been told by a dealer that the 4x4's don't have struts, since the struts actually rotate with the steering. I say this because most of the leaking problems I have been hearing about have been called struts. Can anyone shed some light on the potential problem with the shocks/struts, or is this just a 2 wheel drive issue. BTW I have 18,000 miles on my truck.

I'd just tell the dealer to inspect the front end and replace whatever is leaking under warranty. That will avoid the confusion over terms.

I haven't seen a TSB out on this but if the shock has given up, that's pretty obvious to diagnose.

On struts common wisdom is to replace both, but the S.M. told me they're not struts, just spring over shocks on 4x4 front-end suspension. Therefore only replacing the leaking one. Is yours a 4x4 and are both of yours leaking Ramathorne ? I'm wondering if this is a snow job or if he's being straight up with me. BTW he also said my first mistake was to use the internet for info.

My truck is a 4x4, and they are shocks, not struts. There is an upper and lower control arm, and a rack which located the knuckle. On a strut, the knuckle rotates using the top of the strut as the axis instead of an upper ball joint.

Never looked at the 2wd Ram so I have no idea whats there.

Yep! Mine was leaking as well. leaking at 39k I was told that the shocks were struts, only to find that they were infact shocks, they are just mounted sort-of like a strut, hence the confusion. I replaced mine myself, the dealer told me right after my warranty on the stockers ran out, and they wanted 100 bucks a pop. Went with Monroe Reflex, and a huge difference in front end handling, and only took an hour. BTW I own a 2wd, pretty much the same setup as a
4x4.
