Default Engine swap? What are my options?

Please don't kill me for asking what has probably been asked a thousand times on here.

I did a search but didn't find the info i need.

I have an 04 Ram 1500 with 5.7 Hemi. All stock. 190,000 miles on it. Still running strong, and body and interior, and rear and trans, all flawless.

When/if the motor starts to go, what options do I have and approximate costs, and difficulty if I do myself?

How hard to drop in a 6.1 crate? Too much work with all new electronics and mating to the current transmission?

Would I be better to get this one rebuilt, or buy a new crate 5.7, or just hone the cylinders and put in new rings (assuming it just starts to burn oil)? Or send in for a complete rebuild?

I have the tools and lift etc and should be able to do this myself. I just want to prepare ahead of time, as this is my daily driver and I couldn't live without it for long.

I will only post to the 5.7L

any 5.7L will work in your vehicle, even the 2012 year
it doesn't matter what vehicle it comes out of
RAM 1500, 2500, 3500
Jeeps that have the 5.7L
Chrysler/Dodge cars w/ the 5.7

the short blocks are all the same, some have different HP & cam
most heads are basically the same
the newer 1500 models have MDS & you likely don't want that, but you just leave that off & replace it with what ever bolted on there from a engine with out the MDS

the intake manifold is the major change, it is where most all of the computer stuff is run off of.
That being said, if you took a less used engine out of say a 2009 Jeep with the 5.7L, & you remove the Jeep engines intake manifold & replace it with your current manifold with your current electronics, the only other thing that you would have to check for would be other sensors, & other bolt ons in the short block & heads, if they are different than what you have, exchange them with yours
It is best to have the replacement engine & yours side by side to make the changes, that way it is harder to make a mistake
Then set the replacement engine in have fun

of course rebuilding your current engine is also an option

I am lucky in that there are several auto wrecking/recycling yards within 40 miles
that is where we got the 2009 jeep 3.9L engine to replace my friends 2004 Rams 3.9L engine with a hole in the block

I hope this helps & gives you some insight

A while back I checked what prices would be to get a new, stock, 5.2L magnum installed in place of mine with 155,000 miles, and it was like 1600 bucks installed + a 2 or 3 year warranty I believe. But thats a 5.2L not a hemi, so hope this helps give you a ball park number.

I called a dealer that I have a bit of trust in (more than I do for most dealers). He quoted me a NEW 5.7 long block for $5000, and $1680 +/- a couple hundred for swapping out the intake, and installing the new engine.

So, approximately $7000 for a new motor, with 3 year/100k warranty.

That doesn't sound too awful bad. Especially the warranty.

Of course, if I could get the long block with warranty, and do the swap myself, I could do it in a weekend for only $5000...

What about the 6.1 swapped into the 5.7's place? Is it a direct swap or is there all kinds of electronics, engine mount, and tranny boltup issues?

Looks good, but kinda steep in price. ..

What about the MDS? How hard is it to get it into my truck?
