Yeah, maybe if the Ram lost some major weight thanks to carbon composite . I wonder if there is a technical challenge with implementing a versatile bulkhead in the rear of the cab.. like a midgate and fold down rear seats. But something quick and easy. How cool would it be if the rear seats faced the bed somehow and could be quickly converted to bed space. A crew cab with a 3 foot bed that can be extended in another 3 feet into the cab and ram boxes would be a sweet config. And if light enough, a 290 HP V6 would be fine for me.

I think the Pentastar V6 will be fine in a Regular Cab 4x2. The 2011 F150 RC 4x2 3.7L easily shows tail lights to the 4.6L Ford. It also easily handles the typical half-ton work load of4,000 lb tournament bassboat load or small 3'000 lb camper trailer. It does struggle with high frontal area loads that approach reasonable limits for a half-ton.

The small 4.6L-5.0L V8's are fine in a 1500 with appropriate loads at normal altitudes. You run out of chassis before you run out of power. Once you move up to a 2500 you need more power. Might be why they come standard with 5.7L - 6.2L engines.

Just because your half-ton is rated at 10,000 lb towing doesnt mean a 36' 10,000 lb travel trailer is a good idea. Trailers with a lot of frontal area, sail area and sway potential are a lot different than a utility trailer with 8,000 lb of steel plate.

Ecoboost would be nice if you lived at 9000'.

PS My understanding is the 4.7L is history once they are able to make enough Pentastars and Hemis.

I looked carefully at Avalanche. I liked the body and creature comforts. Seriously considered it.. but here's why it did not happen.

- MPG were terrible or just as bad.
- That midgate is complicated bording on stupid - I don't think rear window rolls down.
- Don't care for a covered bed.
- Did not fold into the back seats so just as long as a quad cab.
- lots of plastic that will fade.
- Damn expensive compared to the Ram.

Those are some pretty good reasons. hahaha I never really liked the Avalanches. They're a good idea, but not my cup of tea.

What iI really want is 2.5L-ish I4 turbocharged Cummins in a Dakota. Something you could still haul branches in, or a couple dirt bikes, and still get great gas mileage. Then they can dump the engine in cars too.

I heard Nissan and Cummins were working to develope a 2.8L I4 in a Titan test mule. Personally i think that's kind of wierd. You'd think they'd come to Ram first, but Nissan probably flashed some cash. IDK.

The engine was still only supposed to get around 30mpg, which is awesome, but if you turbo'd it, you could get some serious mileage and power out of it.

I work along side of 2 other Dodge/Ram owners
We all have our own Pilot Car Services
one guy has a '80s model Dodge, 318 cu. in., standard stick with over 500,000 miles on it
the other guy has a 2003 Ram, with a 3.7, standard stick, put a rod through the block, he now is running a 3.7 out of a '09 Jeep.
We have to keep our speeds down when dead heading, because the 3.7 is just too weak & i hate driving less than 70 MPH

Maybe they will put a 6.4 in the 2013 Ram, along with the 8 speed, that would be cool !!

Default So What's the latests on 2012 Ram with Pentastar v6 and 8 speed transmission

Rumor I read is that there is a huge backlog for Pentastars due to some manufacturing defect that was discovered. I guess that means we won't see a Ram with a Pentastar v6 and 8 speed transmission until the 2013 model year right?

I'm not going to be motivated to look at another truck until the following becomes available.

- 300hp with 22mpg city
- Midsize car length with seating for 5 and a bed that accomodates a sheet
plywood by folding a midgate into the cab.

It sounds like dodge abandoned the LifeStyle truck concept. So I'm hoping any 2014 redesigns make for lighter, more versitile trucks. Maybe something with Kenetic Brake recovery. I'd be willing to settle for as little as 4000lb towing for better mpgs.

IMO sounds like you're dreaming. That hp with mpg is possible, but not within a few years time. midsize car length, seating for 5, and accomadates a sheet of plywood? You just described the length of a quad cab with an 8 foot bed.....longer than my current quad cab lol. It's impossible to fit that into a midsize car length.
