Before the world as we know it changed a few years ago, Chevy was working on the Bare Neccessities Reversatile bulkhead truck. Id post the video, but Chevy has removed it. The design, and Dodge and Toyota were also working on similar midgate prototypes (Rampage and A-Bat), ecompassed a versitle midgate and tailgate to allow a midsized truck to carry a stack of plywood while being no longer than a midsize car. Of course, cargo would be limited if transportng 5 passengers. So it's Cargo now, passenegers later.

GM Bare Necessities

The thing is.. the truck (or whatever) I'm expecting will be limited to 4000lb towing and will likely be unibody and FWD. I think 300hp/22mpg city is very close, but not with 4000lb towing. Yeah, I know we aint there yet.

The other thing is not just thinking in terms of trucks, but rather requirements.. and if 300hp/22mpg city/ 4000lb towing.. Imagine a muslce car like a Challenger with a Tailgate and retractable rear window in this configuration. Rumor is Nissan is working on something similar to this.

Now imagine a challenger trying to pull 4,000 lbs....lol.

Sounds like what you want is a colorado or s10 or dakota crew cab with a midgate. Even then you don't achieve an 8' bed, and in a "midsize" the wheel wells aren't wide enough to accommodate a full sheet. You need a full size to fit a sheet of ply, no way around that. An avalanche is your next closest, and that's a truck without the gap between the bed and cab...

Imagine a short, low, wide, RWD muscle truck with the face and roof line of a Challenger with a lite carbon fiber frame or unibody re-inforcement underpinnings.

There must be a design reason why we don't see midgates on Body on Frame pickup trucks. I think the Avalanche and Ridgelines are re-inforced unibodies.

I agree you can't have a midgate on a truck where the bed is separate from the cab, I was just saying you want a little truck with a ton of seating and ton of bed space, I just don't think you can achieve what you want in a midsize, heck even my fullsize only has the 6' bed, even if I had a midgate I wouldn't pick up 2' of length, and my truck barely fits into parking spots, doesn't fit into some.

Maybe you should make a quad cab el camino haha

I think that is exactly what is coming..remember this conversation.

A two door 5 seater El camino with a midgate that folds into the cab. Re-inforced body so it can tow about 4000lbs.. Really light, Small direct injection, Twin turbo Aluminum engine w/ some form of Variable or 8 speed transmission .. And in this wet dream.. 300hp, 22 mpg city. .. fast, efficient and pretty capable.. and somehow with the tailgate down ... sheets of plywood can be pushed in there and while dreaming so can a 700lb Harley Davidson

I don't think you'd ever achieve a vehicle like that that is light, sure lighter than 5,000 lb yes, but probably no lighter than 4,000 lb. You mentioned CF before, there's no way that will be on a regular production vehicle, too expensive. FG maybe yes, or just plastic like most cars are going to. A sheet of ply with the gate down, now you're back to reality lol. I think they could do a 300 hp, 4,000lb car/truck with 2 doors ext cab, or 4 doors quad cab, and a 6 ft bed, with the bed having a "pocket" that extends under the rear seats giving you an additional foot of space. That leaves your 8' sheet not sticking past the gate. Then can haul 5 people and your sheetrock Or make it a 7'1" bed and close the gate.

You know, I've always wondered why a manufacturer didn't market a truck with slide out ramps from the bed, or even stow away ramps. That would be a huge selling point to me.

My 3.7 has 215hp and the 4.7 is rated at 235hp......what does that 20hp do for me with 2 extra cylinders to feed. I pull my boat (3000 lb) and all my utility trailers. And I cruise the Interstate at 75 mph and get between 18 and 21 tank after tank. That's 18 to 20 hwy and city combined.
I love the sound of the big V8 but do not want to feed it. On the other hand my Crown Vic with the 4.6 V8 gets 25 mpg and has since it was new. When new it would do 26 or 27 hwy.

^yeah, and also, although the v6 and the old 4.7L were close in hp, the v8 still had about 100 lb ft or torque more, and that's what you want in a heavy truck, especially when towing.
