Default 2011 ram exhaust/warranty question

So as of last week i am the proud owner of a new 2001 ram 1500 4x4.

I went to a local shop to order a magnaflow muffler/turn downs to be installed. The guy at the shop told me that i should order an entire cat back system that could be easily uninstalled because changing the exhaust will completely VOID my factory warranty.

So is this true or just FUD? I find it hard to believe that you cant put anything but a mopar exhaust system on a new ram without voiding your warranty. Thanks.

Not true. They have to prove that the exhaust caused the issue that was in question(if you were to have one). If you throw a rod, they cant void the warranty because the exhaust was changed. Unlikely that the exhaust will cause any issues anyway, as long as it's done right.

Not true. The only way Dodge can void your warranty is if you modify something and that something fails. Or, you replace an OEM item (like your exhaust) and it fails, causing damage to an OEM part.

But to totally void your warranty is not allowed under the Magnusson-Moss act. Let's say you put on an aftermarket exhaust, it fails and your driveline is damaged due to interference from the exhaust system. Dodge has no warranty obligation for the driveline.

Let's say you put on an aftermarket exhaust and your stereo head unit fails. The exhaust did not cause the failure of the head unit and if you are still in warranty, they have an obligation to repair or replace the stereo.

This concept applies to any mods you may do to your vehicle.

And you don't need a full catback system. Go with a replacement muffler or mufflers of your choice.

Wow. This is excellent info. I was wondering the exact same thing. Getting a 2011 this week and first is going to be a CAI and then I wanted a single in/dual out Magnaflow but I was unsure about the warranty too.

Most dealers are OK with an exhaust and an intake. Beyond that, you can expect a little hassle from them if something breaks. But again, the Magnusson-Moss Act provides for rights and responsibilities of both parties regarding warranty.

Remember, you'll hear the company line first in any case from the dealer service adviser, service manager or a technician. All you need to be able to do is debate the issue in a confident, respectful and at times, inquiring manner. Assert your rights, work with them and don't fall back on statements like "YOU HAVE TO WARRANTY THIS!!!" or "I'M GONNA CALL DODGE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!" Even though you want to, browbeating, insisting or yelling at them will get you no where and in fact, may hurt your chances to reach some reasonable accommodation with the dealer.

When I recently asked my dealer, they said anything changed from the catalytic converter forward could void the warranty. Ask 5 dealers and you'll probably get 3 or 4 different answers.

If the exhaust shop told you that then thank them for their advice, leave their establishment and find another shop that knows what they are talking about

Operative word there is "could" as it depends on what you do. Replace the exhaust manifolds with a set of headers and your OEM O2 sensor goes bad? That's on you.

Put on a set of headers and your window switches fail? That's on them.

My dealer told me the same thing. Anything after the cats would have no effect on the warranty.
