Default Anybody Know Tansmissions??

I bought a 1996 Ram 1500, 5.2 auto 4x4. The trans was out of it and I got a good deal so I jumped on it. I got all parts with the truck except the trans. I found a trans and put it in the truck, everything was going great until I went to plug my electrical wires to the trans.....the truck has a round, big plug (like 8-10 wires)and the trans I got only has a 3 wire plug. I got screwed. Anyway around this problem without starting all over.

You could make up an adapter but I would bet the computer won't be able to control the trans you have as the # of circuits being fed to it has been reduced by 5. Got any transmission shops locally that you can talk to and see if they have a solution?

Errr, hate to say it but you're in a pickle. Sounds like you have a 46RH and your truck needs a 46RE. There are a few differences. If you had some RE parts you could transplant them, but time, trouble, and probably money would be best if you just got the an RE complete and ready to bolt in.

Shop manual says to locate build sheet "body code plate" under carpet under passenger seat or attached to front face of the radiator closure panel to see what the truck had in it when built.

Line 4 top line digits 13,14;15 tranny codes

In my 2000 shop manual DGP is 47RE, DGT is 46RE and DGK is 42RE A/T trannys.

Dodge dealer should be able to take your VIN and tell you tranny code, too.

Saw this on my quest for info on the 46re and thought maybe it can help.

It's not that big a deal at all... There is a kit to use the electric tranny on the older trucks... It takes the place of the computer... I'm not sure exactly where I saw it... look around... the physical bolt up is the same, everything will match up.

Sure it could work. Probably just swap the main computer for one for a manual shift model. Then get the external kit to translate the vehicle speed for the computer. Heck, might even get lucky and have that part work without an external unit, or just use a GPS for a speedo. Set up the RH with the vacuum switches so it doesn't need any computer controls. By the time it's all said and done, might even save a few bucks on a spit 'n barbwired, duct taped setup, but it'll work.... Maybe it'll even work right, but if you're not sure you can do it, you'll be leagues ahead biting the bullet and getting the right transmission.... Not to mention clumps of hair not ripped from your scalp.
