I just did this mod , I read another post somewhere about heating up the utility knife so i tryed it. It worked great the knife cut through the thin plastic like butter. Theres no need to remove the fan thats just more work . It took me about 5 minutes to cut it out if that getting the filter in was cake and snapping the cover on was a snap. Dont buy the mopar filter either their $30 go to your local autoparts store ask for a cabin air filter for a 2012 Avenger $15 and the cover from the dealer $13 total cost $28 and only a few minutes time easiest mod you can do.

Nice mod & write-up. Thanks !

I heated the utility knife blade with my Bic , took my time, didnt slice myself...

Not exactly 'easy' mainly because of the difficulty of 'underdash' work,
cramped, on yur back, over your head,, big hands..

I put the folded up 'beach' blanket on the floor to make kneeling / leaning / laying on (dirt covered rubber floormat ) a little more comfy

Just finished this mod. Fairly easy to do, low cost. Heard it can save your AC condenser somehow also? Oh well hopefully it will keep the dust down.

Thank you for the write up. I have a severe allergy; I will try to get this cabin filter mod installed soon.

I'll try this Fram cabin filter for 2012 Avenger instead of the Mopar. It is available atleast on my local Wal-Mart store.

I looked at the where the filter goes today, There is an opening above where the filter mod goes, which would be the top of the filter, is just the recirculated air that is filtered and not the outside air, because you can stick your hand in there on top of where the filter will go. To me it looks like it`s just the recirculated air that goes thru the filter

Just did this mod, and it went well. It really is a tight space, and I was worried about slipping and cutting a wiring harness or something. The plastic has a perfect outline of where to cut and can be "stabbed" right through with a nice sharp utility knife. It's tedious due to the tight space, but just be careful and it'll turn out fine. Had to bend the tabs in a little for a tighter fit to get the door to snap on. But it's definitely on there now. Really glad I found out about this mod, cause it sure gets dusty up in North Dakota!
