Default 03 Ram – 4.7 w/ 90k miles or 5.7 w/114k miles?

Hi from a newb. I’ve been looking at 02-04 Rams for a while. I’ve found two in nice condition in my price range. Both are quad cabs, have clean carfaxs and are in comparable condition.

#1 has a 5.7 Hemi w/ 114k miles. I’m a bit concerned about the amount of miles, but not bad for an 03. I really like the added HP with the Hemi.

#2 has a 4.7 w/ 90k miles – 24k less than #1 and is about the same price. I like the lower miles of #2.

The MPG is not a lot different between the two and not an issue for me.
Any advise/thoughts for a newb? Thanks!

from what i have dealt with id go with the 4.7 because i know that engine can scream with only a little work done to it, however i know that everyone i have talked to with the new hemi's around here have had problems when they get over 60k miles, some as bad as having to replace the motor completely at 55k

I'd go with the hemi and this is coming from a 4th gen with the 4.7. I love the power my truck has now compared to my 4 banger I used to drive in a pickup, but that hemi just gets it man. You'd have to do quite a bit of work to make up the 80 horsepower difference between the two motors. I've only done an exhaust setup, next is intake of some sort but I'm really gonna leave it rather stock. I may do gears later on but thats down the road. Gears you FEEL almost instantly and when you step on it, a 3.55 vs a 4.56 is a world of difference of putting what power you DO have to the ground rather than trying to put on little 5hp here and 10hp there.

I'd personally go with the hemi over the 4.7. All other things being equal, you will love having the additional power that the hemi will be able to give you.

Umm... I've only seen one person need to completely replace a hemi and it was because he sunk it in a lake

OT: I have the 4.7 and I must say, GO WITH THE HEMI! Do not get the 4.7.

Hi and a warm Carolina welcome to the best RAM ForumZ on the web. I'm not the first and won't be the last to ask ~ How about posting a few photos of your truck? I'm here to help you navigate the site so drop by the Newbie Checkin when you get the new truck!

As an owner of the Hemi who had an '06 with the 4.7 I recommend the Hemi power and it's tough to beat!

I would do a super once over of the truck again, and if bother have same amount of rust (lets hope little to none) both have good tires good interiors etc. Then Id say go w/ the HEMI if properly taken care of a HEMI powered RAM or a 4.7 powered RAM can last a very long time so why not pick up the extra power. Just be careful of getting the HEMI just b/c of extra power and dont overlook other things if the 4.7 truck is in better shape.
