Hey gang, Did a cheap mod today on the ram. After the mod, took a couple of vid's and went on a little hwy trip (about 50 miles or so each way). Noticed a 1mpg increase in avg on hwy. City will probably be next to nothing...but these are V8's we are talking about.
The mod is the Deletion of the Positve Crankcase Ventilation Breather line. What this line does is:
-Rob you of a couple horsies.
-Bogs down the responsiveness of your Beasty Powertech V8
Believe me when I say, the SLHemi (S
ess than a Hemi
) needs every pony its got.
-Robs you of 1-2mpg
-Makes your Throttle Body REALLY oily every few thousand miles.
How does it do this? Well, it takes the oily fumes and excess air pressure from your crankcase, and puts it into your intake. The pix will tell all, but the main reason I did this was so that I would not have to clean that throttle body as often. That thing gets filthy. I really did not expect any gains in either HP/responsiveness or MPG, but I was pleasantly suprised. So, without further adue...the How-To and Video results.
What you will need:
-Flathead screwdriver (Free)
-1 1/2" to 3/8" step-down hose adapter ($4.99)
-1 1/2" plug (mine came in packs of 2). ($3.99)
-The hose of the intake (pictured in the step 1 pic), or some 1/2 rubber hose. (Free, took mine off the truck)
-Utility knife to cut said hose (Free)
-2 hose clamps ($.25 ea)
-breather filter ($9.99)
Step 1- Remove airbox top, intake tube and this hose:
Step 2- Remove Breather filter from package:
Step 3- Attach Breather filter to step-down adapter as shown. Insert 3/8" end into filter hose and tighten clamp (included with filter):
Step 4- Cut Intake tube, the piece you want is the first elbow, with roughly one inch on either end of the bend. I cut mine too short, but I was able to make it work. Make Your's about 1/2" longer than this one:
Step 5- Install new/cut hose on Valve cover hole you removed the old hose from. Slide hose clamps over hose:
Step 6- Install breather filter on other end of hose, tighten clamps.
Step 7: Put a cap on hole in Airbox cover Shown in the above pic^.
Step 8: Clean Throttle Body. How-to here.
Step 9: Reassemble intake.
Step 10: Pedal to Metal.
Final Product (side view):
When I took these video's, I WAS NOT in a neighborhood. I was however on the base, so I did not want to get too crazy.
