Default first oil change

i had 4 free changes from the factory and couldnt wait to get them done with and put my choice of oil in. so today i hit 20,000 miles and i did my first oil change. first off i was a little worried about running 5w20. that stuff is thin as water wth is up with that? well i put 7 quarts of mobil one extended performance full synthetic in my truck and it was still below the line and it wants to ad more oil, im going to go to work tomorrow and check it if it still needs it ill put it in. the oil says its good for 15,000 miles but i think im going to run it to 6000 and change it. i used a mobil 1 oil filter. i also changed the air filter to a K&N and it seems like a much better filter.

Hi, I'm glad to hear you did your own work with out an issue. The thin oil is needed to allow the MDS system to function properly. Nice to have you around and hope to see more from you in the future!

Most newer vehicles have very thin oil, it helps with mpg as well. I use the same mobile 1 ext performance oil and love it, I also don't go 15,000 between changes, I usually go like 7 or 8 thousand on my truck, and about 10k on my wife's 4 cylinder car. I am able to buy that oil on sale for around $35 with filter, so it's a great deal compared to the ~$80 normal price. Even though the oil may not break down in 15k miles, it is still wise to change it more frequently as you can't do anything to avoid dirt entering the engine and contaminating the oil, and there's always some metal generation going on inside the engine as well.

My Ram is brand new and should not need an oil change for a while yet. When I do have it changed, I think I will go with full syn as I read that it stands up to high temps better and also flows more quickly at start up in cold weather. Since it is supposed to last longer than regular oil, and I drive less than 6k per year on mostly short trips, do I wait until the recommended mileage, or more often?

It's obviously up to you but if it were me and I only drove 6k miles a year, I would use a good synthetic like mobil 1 or amsoil or similar and just change it once a year.
