Haven't changed my oil as of yet, just shy of 2400 miles on it, I have a free oil change from dealer so I will use that then after will be putting in Amsoil, I'm a dealer so it's nice and cheap for me

I have been using Pennzoil 5w20 oil in my truck with a Fram Tough Guard oil filter. I only change the oil with the truck tells me that it's time to do it, which is usually around 6,000 miles

Is the oil warning a standard feature on all 4th gen RAMs? I just purchased one with 19,000 on the clock - dealer changed the oil before I purchased it. Just want to make sure I have the oil change "warning" on my SLT.
In the past I used Amsoil and Royal Purple, as well as Mobile 1. I generally stick with he synt oils....better heat dissipation and more miles between the changes.

I think so, my 2010 SLT has it. I don't go by it though, I think mine came on like 3,000 miles after I bought the truck, then around 4,000 miles after I changed the oil, probably will come on again soon.....I run 15k mile oil and change every 8 or 10k or so...

I know what the owner's manual and all of the experts say. The oil change message is "duty based", and the computer will tell you when you need to change the oil.

Personally I don't believe that. I don't know if it's a programmable feature from the dealer or what. On both my '08 QC AND my '10 CC Sport the change oil message comes on at around 2500 miles (every 2500 miles). With my '08 as I had lifetime free oil changes I'd bring it in for service every time it went off (or as soon as I had the time to do so).

I'm doing my own oil changes in my '10 using the Mobil 1 5W20 that I get from Wally Word and either a Mobil 1 filter or a K & N (depends on what's on sale at the time), and I change it about every 5000 miles (give or take).

Twice now I've had the change oil message come on within 500 miles of having changed the oil. I didn't reset the sensor after changing the oil. I don't know if this is a factor or not....

ExCoastie, the computer has no idea when you changed your oil unless you find a way to tell it. As far as i know the only way to reset it is when the message is active. If there is a way to reset it when I actually do an oil change I would love to know so I can start doing that.

On my truck the messge has come on twice, both times at around 7k miles. I drive it hard enough that I would expect the message more often. Maybe the dealer is resetting the sensor when they do changes but I don't think so. My dealer wants me to bring it in for oil every 3k. With modern engines and oils that's a bit early for most applications. I change mine every 5k and plan to change to mobile 1. I just hit 15k and I'm about to do my 3rd oil change this weekend.

I'm sure the dealer is resetting the message. Here's the process:

Turn key to "ON", do not start engine. fully press gas pedal 3 times slowly. Turn key off. Should reset.

Default Oil change

I changed mine at 1000, just to get any junk that might have been knocked loose during break-in. It gets it every 3000 miles after that. Dealer puts in whatever he wants, that way it's documented and he's the one covering the warranty, so there will be nothing to cast doubt on the maintenance if there is a problem.

i also changed mine at 1000 miles to get any residual metal particles out. i'll go by the oil warning light from here on out, assuming it's reasonable (e.g. doesn't come on after 500 miles, and doesn't stay dormant for 10,000 miles). one thing i really liked about my previous GMC Sierra is GM's OLM system. at any given time you can check the "% oil life left" which was nice. i don't like the idea of just waiting for the GO light to come on in the Ram and have it be somewhat of a surprise. plus, i always changed my Sierra's oil at 20-30% oil life left just to be on the semi-cautious side.
