i also changed mine at 1000 miles to get any residual metal particles out. i'll go by the oil warning light from here on out, assuming it's reasonable (e.g. doesn't come on after 500 miles, and doesn't stay dormant for 10,000 miles). one thing i really liked about my previous GMC Sierra is GM's OLM system. at any given time you can check the "% oil life left" which was nice. i don't like the idea of just waiting for the GO light to come on in the Ram and have it be somewhat of a surprise. plus, i always changed my Sierra's oil at 20-30% oil life left just to be on the semi-cautious side.
Well I don't know how the gm's system works, but I doubt it actually does some diagnosis of the oil to see how much life is left, it is probably based on time and other factors, similar to our rams. I agree though the surprise of the light doesn't help much. Either way I wouldn't trust the light. I think they do this just for the people who go 20,000 miles without checking/changing oil, so that when the light comes on they thing "oh wow it must be serious if the light came on, I better change it"...

you are correct, it's an algorithm based on the number of combustion events, thermal cycles, average RPM, etc. etc.

I just want to know how accurate it is as far as detecting when the oil actually should be changed. It doesn't take into account the type of oil you use, so there's obviously some ambiguity. I use 15k mile extend performance mobil 1 oil, but change it about every 8-10k miles. The oil message comes on about 2 to 3 times in between my change interval and I just reset it each time it comes on.

if you're really interested, you can send your oil in to be analyzed by Blackstone: http://www.blackstone-labs.com/

i've personally never bothered to go through the trouble.

if you do, make sure to post your results. i'm sure others would be interested, even if certain variables are unique to you.

Will do. I'm changing my oil this weekend so won't be able to get the kit in time. Will do on my next oil change, and I'll write down the exact mileages so it will be correct, and keep track of if I add any oil in between changes as they ask that on their site (I can't remember but don't think I added any this time...)

My owners manual says to change the oil every 6000 miles or 6 months, which ever
comes first. There is no mention that if you use "special" oil you don't need to.

I stick to the manual and Dodge owns the power train for life.

I change mine every 8,000 miles like the owners manual says. I never had the oil change message come on until about 15,500 miles but once it came on I reset it so it turned off
