Default Antifreeze question

Can someone help me out on this? I have searched and found several different answers as to how many gallons of antifreeze a 5.2l engine will take. Some say 2 and some say as much as 5 gallons. I'm going to be flushing the radiator soon and need to find out. Also should I change the thermostat as well?

I've got a 1997 Ram 1500 2wd

Thanks!

cooling capacity is 17 quarts fluid in the 1997 5.2, IF you have the 3 core radiator, that is the largest radiator that was available, it could be a bit more
as for the thermostat, that is a decision that i could NOT make, without seeing it

I would advise that if your hoses & belts are about 5 years old, check the belts for cracking on the wear side, depending on the type hose that you have, at the curve, take your finger & thumb & squeeze, if you feel anything like a crunching, it is likely a spring inside the hose that has seen better days. The spring holds the curved part open, if it wasn't there & the water heats up, the hose would collapse. The spring gets old & it begins to rust & then breaks, the pieces go in places it doesn't belong
