Default AFE Cold Air Intake

http://afepower.com/shop/details_new...7L&&brandID=53

I was really impressed with the improved sound the K&N Cold air intake produces with the Hemi. I doubt I would notice the "+10hp" they claim, but the sound alone won me over.

After doing a bit of reading, however, it seems that the guys over at "AFE" are claiming a gain of 18hp. Does anyone have any experience with these guys? 18hp seems like a big gain compared to what K&N or Volant claim. What could they be doing differently? (exaggerating, maybe?? lol )

That does seem sketchy, but they say "max gain", which means it's not at the peak, so it is plausible...

I tend to ignore the claims and look for a part that demonstrates quality workmanship and good design.

I have their Stage 1 CAI on my truck and like it a lot.

I was told if you get a COI, get the AFE.

Well, I have also been looking around at what some of the higher-end tuners use (Hennessey etc). It seems like they often go for the "Air Raid" CAI.

AIRAID makes good stuff but in all reality, they all pretty much flow the same and your stock engine will only use so much CFM when running. Anything more than that is just air waiting to get into the manifold.

Now, you can always do the research to determine volumetric capacity and flow of the stock intake manifold and the size of the combustion chambers, then find out what the CAI flows.

I suspect most cold air intakes flow more air than can be used at one time. Nuthin' wrong with that.

The high end tuners are looking for more air, for sure, especially if they have gone forced induction or have done head/cam/header work. But ya notice they use an off the shelf CAI. That tells me that for a stock engine, the CAI flow is more than you need.

I have the aFe Stage 2 CAI and it does sound cool. Uses the lower half of the stock air box so it's simple to install. The tube was annoying to figure out cause they put the logo on backwards. I don't feel their "18hp" gain but a definate improvement.

I have the similar AFE for the older Ram and the two things I noticed after I installed it were:

1. Better throttle response.

2. The exhaust tone changed.

Oh...yeah...and I got a gazillion HP outta the mod too.

For those of you with the AFE, what's the difference between the Stage 1 and Stage 2 kits?

They seem to be identical except for the black vs aluminum(?) intake tube. That and I believe they are priced the same.
