Default Want to atleast bark my tires

Got a 97 Ram 4x4 1500,33in tires, volant cold air intake whole kit, throttle body spacer, hypertech high voltage coil, flowmaster. Has great torque after take off but that's after u hit about 15mph. Wont even burn out in gravel like it should. Was thinking of getting hypertech programmer cause that's all I can find for this year truck? Was thinking 4:10 gears, but guy at offroad shop said I would lose alot of gas mileage and shouldn't do it. I also don't like the way it shifts down everytime I go up a slight hill. Flat road she flys though! Lol. Any advice would help. Thanks

On my old 2001 ram I had 4.10's and the gas mileage wasn't bad. Also, I had a good bump in performance by installing some 1.7 rr's.

What gears do you have now? What is the transmission on that truck do you know? If you can tell me I can look up gear ratios and give you an idea on gas mileage. I'm guessing gearing is your issue since you have 33" tires.... Assume it's maybe lifted too?

If you do gears, it'll be two sets since it's 4wd, so, for starters, and much less money, I'd get a high stall torque converter.....something around 2000-2200 rpm.

Aren't stock stall converters around like 1,600 or 1,800 so going to 2,000 wouldn't be much change....I'd go a little higher like 2,400 or 2,600.....but then again I'm not real familiar with that engine/trans.

Good point about the 4wd gear changing being expensive...

I would take out the TB spacer ... adds un needed noise with no benifits....unless you tapped to add nos.

3.55 isn't terrible, so it probably isn't worth the $ for a gear swap....I agree the TB spacer does nothing. I'd agree a higher stall torque converter would probably be beneficial to you....anything else you probably won't notice any difference.

Weeeell I tend to be a bit conservative on things, but one thing must be considered. Take my Shelby Dakota for example. 2000 stall, 3600lbs, 3.90 gears. Stomp it and the tach would flash to around 2k to 2100 immediately. Put that same 2k rpm converter in a 5000 lb truck with 3.55 gears and despite the rating, off the line at full throttle the converter will run to a higher rpm before it digs in, easily 200-300 rpm more than the rating. Taken the other way, an 1800 lb rod with 4.56 gears simply won't load the converter enough to get more than say, 1800 stall on a converter rated for 2000 stall. So, that's where I draw my suggestion. Also, at 2600 stall, you're gonna be in a pickle with 3.55's and 33 inch tires. What rpm do you plan on the converter locking up, and do you realize how fast the truck will be going? Just trying to strike a reasonable compromise.
