Default Headlight switch issue !

Hey guys, just have a quick question for anyone who may knows or have had the same issue. I have a 96' 1500 slt 5.2 with auto 2wd. I was driving home tonight after a 13 hr day at work crusing down the road around 60mph was almost home and start smelling smoke like plastic burning and headlights started to flicker and dim a little so I immediately pulled over and popped hood and didnt find anything. Jumped back in truck and put hand on dash on the side where headlight switch is and it was really hot in that area then started seeing the smoke coming thru the top of dash. I made it home and disconnected battery and pulled switch out of dash and the metal plate on the one side of switch was burning hot so I'm thinking maybe the actual switch was shorting out would it shorting out cause it to get so hot? any ideas and help would be so greatful I can't afford losing my truck to an electrical fire. please help ! thanks everyone...

Yes, an electrical short causes high current which leads to the heat you experienced. Our truck is also a '96, and with the same engine as yours, too. When my father-in-law gave my son this truck, he told us that in cold weather, the headlights won't come on until the passenger compartment has warmed up a bit. There must be something faulty about these headlight switches. I'm definitely going to replace ours now that I've read your post.

My 96 had the headlight switch burn out too. I got an aftermarket one from a seller on e-bay( can't remember who) and problem solved. They do seem to fail somewhat often.

Thanks " DadsDodge " for the insight I figured it just had to be the switch itself which was making it get so hot when it was shorting out. " MadDevil " Let me ask you this,Did you have the smoke as well as it was shorting out or did it not get to that point. I looked at the points on the switch and you can see where it got so hot to where the plastic was starting to melt a little. also on the female end of the plug as well in a few places so hopefully i'll just have to replace the switch and not the whole plug harness.

DodgeGuy85, did you replace the switch? I ask because I need to get ours replaced before cold weather (since my father-in-law said the lights won't come on when the truck is cold). Looking at the auto parts stores' web sites I see a WIDE variety of switches and prices. If you replaced your switch and can pass along some advice, I'd be grateful.

Yea I finally got the switch replaced. I found it on ebay for about $20 + shipping its the exact replacement for my year truck. some guy in Indiana who owns a salvage yard had it and also sent me a new harness plug as well because when it shorted it melted the plug a little along with it. so I just cut the old plug off and spliced the new one onto the harness plugged it in to the switch and it works perfectly fine. I would get on ebay if possible you'll be able to find one there.

I dont know the exact name of the seller who I got mine from but if you get on ebay in the search box type in either 1996 dodge headlight switch or just, dodge ram headlight switch it will come up with a bunch of listings on switches for different models and prices.you may even find the same guy I got mine from. not sure of the sellers name though it was "SALVAGE" something you may get lucky and get it from the same guy i did.He is located in Indiana.i'll try and get on ebay and get the info for you.

Ok I got on ebay and got it for you the sellers name is actually "INDIANA-AUTO" I payed $15.95 + $5.95 for shipping and got it within a week. So when you get on ebay you may even be able to search just the name of seller or when you type dodge ram headlight switch or 1996 dodge headlight switch look thru all the listings and you'll find the guy I bought it from.

I appreciate the help! I used the "advanced search" feature on eBay and was able to search just that seller's listings, but didn't find the Ram headlight switch. Maybe he has sold out of them. I'll keep checking because I know I need to swap out the switch.

Thank you for your help, and I'm glad you got yours swapped out successfully!
