Default anybody have any advice to offer?

I am in the middle of a dilemma.....My '99 Ram with 5.2 and a bad tranny is costing me more money than I want to pay for anymore. I have lots of money into this truck in misc. parts and pieces. A mechanic told me recently that my transmission is going to give out soon. Should I buy a newer truck with a better tranny and more power, or keep mine and dump the money into the tranny? I also want more power for towing. Which means going to the 360 or the stroker kit from Hughes for the 318! All of which is not cheap. But if i put the money into it there shouldn't be anymore problems.....in theory. Has anybody else been in this same situation?

It may be nice to have a newer truck, but it is almost always never more cost effective to buy a new one. Just think....If you spend hundreds on monthly payments....in one year you could buy several transmissions lol....but it's up to you. I opted to get my newer ram from what I had (97 s10) even though the s10 ran great.... I love my ram but still regret it from time to time as it's a ton of money....but I am overall happy with the decision.

If it is costing you more money monthly to upkeep the current truck than the payments on a new truck, then there is your answer.

If it's costing that much you're not doing it right.
Bite the bullet and buy the good stuff the first time. Your transmission, when built properly can handle much more than stock ratings, and can even tow in OD, but it won't be a $900 refurb. I'm talking $3500, but you won't break it.
How much are you planning on towing?

not wanting to tow anything excessive. My camper has a dry weight of 4500 and loaded i am not sure. Are those viper transmissions from PATC any good? The tranny was rebuilt about 3 years ago and cost me $2400. If I could get the tranny problem solved then start working on getting more power or a bigger engine I would be happy

I have a Viper level 2 from PATC in my upgraded '89 Shelby Dakota. Almost better than sex. Yeah, they're good.

If you already have a lot of money in the truck, I assume it was done to correct other deficiencies, yes? If so, then you have one more to take care of...the transmission.

I had a '99 and it needed some work and it needed more power than the 318 would ever be capable of. By the time I added up all that I wanted/needed to do to make it into what I wanted, I was looking at a LOT more money than it was worth. Not a good financial decision.

So, I went for a newer truck. I'm very happy that I did because if I hadn't, I'd still be working on the '99 and not enjoying a HEMI.

well yes and no...just put new tires on...less than 200 milesw on them. fender flares, CAI, and a valve body in hopes that would solve tranny problem, but it didn't. most other stuff is just routine or stuff i wanted for it.

Just need the trans fixed/replaced and would like to either get a 360 and build it up or do the stroker kit for the 318. That would just be an over time thing though. Buy a block and work on it as money comes available.

Yeah, you can go that way. I just couldn't get over how much I was looking at spending and decided to go in another direction.
