Default Swapping from 3.92 to 4.56

So I have a 2005 ram 1500, open differential with 3.92 gears. I am interested in swapping to the 4.56 gears for more acceleration. I don't want to change the differential to a lsd just yet. I'm wondering if anyone has done this with the oem differential, and if so just how hard is the swap? I haven't worked on differentials before so it's a new field for me.

Honestly, a gear swap is pretty involved and requires some special tools such as a dial indicator with magnetic base, press, a socket and breaker bar capable of collapsing a crush sleeve, torque wrenches, and preload wrench, just to name a few. At the very least, you should have someone experienced with gear swaps present to guide you through the more complicated steps.

^^^Concur if you don't know how to do it or have the special tools required. Why don't you want to install an LSD? An open 4.56 will be even worse taking off from a dead stop.

Huh, well thanks for that insight on the tools and knowledge needed. And I totally agree about the LSD being the way to go, right now it's just the money that would have to be put into it. Which right now that seems like the best way to go, LSD with 4.56 gears.

3.92 with LSD to 4.56 with LSD was a big difference, so if you go from open 3.92 to 4.56 LSD will be a world of difference. I added a 2800 TC after the gear switch. Even bigger difference.
