Arrow Porter_'s Mod Thread - 2011 Ram 1500 CC 4x4

starting a mod thread for the light mods i plan to add to my 2011 Ram 1500 crew cab 4x4. i'm a fan of the OEM+ look, so none of my mods will be very extreme.

Mod List:
green = complete
red = not yet complete

front window tint (match OEM rear)
leveling kit
A/T tires (305/55/20?)
OEM side steps
debadge tailgate
spray-on bed liner
OEM tow hooks
navigation head unit

a quick run-down of the mods to come:
A/T tires - figuring out clearance issues with the upper control arms. i will purchase these before snow hits the ground in my area.
OEM side steps - i'd like to purchase these at the same time as the tires to help avoid rock chips on the rocker panels. also my soon-to-be wife has to hop a little to get into the truck. it's tough for me to spend $450 on something that is purely functional and not particularly good looking. this mod will probably lag the tires a bit.
debadge tailgate - i need to clean the tailgate up by removing the 4x4 badge and the enormous Big Horn badge. still undecided on what to do with the rest of the truck.
spray-on bed liner - i only use my bed a dozen times or so throughout the year (at most). this can wait a bit.
OEM tow hooks - would like to get these installed before snow hits the ground....just in case.
navigation head unit - purely frivolous. they look pretty.

Pics:
what i traded in for my new Ram:
2008 GMC Sierra SL 4.8L

the day i brought it home:

window tint and 1.5" Top Gun Customz leveling kit installed:

CV angles (not bad at all!):

more to come!

Looking Good!
I completely agree with having the tires replaced before winter. I ran my OEM Goodyears last winter, and did survive it, but sure noticed the lack of traction compared to my previous trucks with BFG AT's.
The OEM tow hooks are super easy to install, and you can get the replacement plastic trim piece with the tow hook holes already in it. ( Us sport owners have to mod ours )

Very nice looking truck, the level kit really gives it a nice stance, good job so far!

thanks for the confirmation on the oem goodyears. i've ran BFG A/T's in the past and really liked them. this time around i've got my eye on Toyo Open Country A/T's. good to know about the tow hook install. you'd think with as expensive as these trucks are they would all come standard with front tow hooks. they're one of those things that i'll rarely, if ever, use but the one time you need them...

Lookin' good! A 305 section width tire may be a bit too wide if you use the stock wheels. I suspect you'll rub on the inside.

yep that's what i'm trying to figure out. i'd rather not install wheel spacers. here's a copy/paste of my post from another thread. maybe someone can give some insight?

here's my situation:
- stock goodyears (33"x11" per Tirerack.com) on stock 20x8 (+19.05mm) painted alum. wheels
- truck is leveled 1.5" with strut spacers
- would like 305/55/20 Toyo Open Country A/T's (33.2"x12.4" per Toyo's website)
- per my super-accurate measuring (stuck a highlighter between tire sidewall and UCA, then measured the width of the highlighter) i've got 3/4" gap between stock goodyears and UCA. this was measured with tires pointing straight.

so, clearance with 305/55/20's:
(12.4"-11")/2 = 0.7" wider tire, which leaves 0.05" clearance....in a perfect world where things are manufactured perfectly. that's obviously not enough clearance.

i've spoken with two local tires shops (Discount Tire and Les Schwab) and both refuse to work on vehicles with wheel spacers, let alone install them. the guy at Discount Tire seems confident that he can mount the tires without wheel spacers and without them rubbing, i'm skeptical based on what i've read from others.

my questions to anyone that can give any input (much appreciated):
- i'd much rather not install 1/4" wheel spacers. anyone running 305/55/20's without wheel spacers? any issues?
- mounting a 12.4" wide tire on an 8" wide wheel is not ideal, but both tire shops said they can make it work (i understand cupping will occur, possibly poor wear, etc). does anyone have any idea if this will help or hinder my issues with clearance? logically, my mind tends to think that it will work against me since the sidewall will be cupping out more than on say a 9" wide wheel. can anyone give insight into this?
- lastly, i'd love to see and hear from people running the 20" painted aluminum wheels with 305/55/20's, and how they went about making them work.

Looks really good! I wish dodge hadn't screwed us with the chromies over and made ours 8" wide also.
