Default 2011 1500 Towing Capacity

I am looking to know what size boat my 2011 dodge ram 1500 laramie can handle. Anyone know the weight? My specs are below

2011 Dodge Ram 1500 Laramie
3.92 Rear Axle Ratio
Trailer Break Control
Class IV Receiver Hitch

Are there any aftermarket parts I should get to increase the towing capacity?

do you have the Hemi engine?
is it the standard cab, quad cab, crew cab, or mega cab
long bed or short bed
tires 17" or 20"

these all go into the towing equation, when you are ready, then go to this web site & start from the beginning, under technical information you will see Base weights/ ........../......./trailer tow,
chose the magnification that you need to read the charts

Do you have a certain size in mind? My truck has the same specs, only with the 3.55 gears, which would be less tow-worthy than your 3.92's, but I pull my inlaw's 23' Crownline Deck Boat to the lake at least 1-2 times a month. Closest lake is an hour away and the boat dealer said the boat+trailer weight was around 5500 to 6500 lbs (depending on whatever you carry in the boat). You can definitely feel the boat back there, but it still pulls like a champ even at speeds over 65 to 70mph. Avg MPG is around 10.

OK, here is what i found for your Ram

Payload = 1400 pounds, load in the bed
Base Weight = 5373 pounds, completely empty
GVWR = 6800 pounds, 2 weights above added together

Max Trailer weight = 9950 pounds

weight distributing hitch highly recommended

GCWR = 15,500 pounds ( The gross combination weight rating (GCWR) is the maximum allowable combined mass of a towing road vehicle, passengers and cargo in the tow vehicle, plus the mass of the trailer and cargo in the trailer )

you would only gain 50 more pounds if you had 17" tires

I used to tow a 27' Baja go fast with my 2002 Ram 4.7 with 3.92s every weekend to a lake 2 hrs away with no problems at all. It was probably around 6500 lbs loaded up. Later on a upgraded and got a 32' Baja with twin engines on a custom triple axle trailer. I also towed that with the 2002. I only towed that one twice a year, once up then back home in the fall. That was about 9000 lbs loaded up.

I wish i had my current truck when i had that 32' Baja... Basically my point is that a 26' boat behind a hemi is not even a challenge for it, imo... Dont get me wrong, you will feel it back there but it will be no prob at all.

@ GTYankee I think that the base weight number includes a 150 pound driver(NOT SURE IF FUEL IS INCLUDED). Payload weight is everything else; the amount that you weigh over 150, passengers, CD's, computers as well as anything in the bed. I think that the Dodge tow weights are real world as I have noticed very good towing characteristics with this truck hauling my 24' Regal with full fuel weighing about 6500#.
I think that it is important to think about several things. Typically a weight distribution hitch will not benefit hauling a boat as most of the weight is at the rear of the trailer (engine/fuel) so consequently you are well within the tongue weight. Tow ratings aren't based on motor as much as the frame, transmission, gearing and brake capability (VW Toureg has 9800# tow capacity V6 and V8, huge brakes and an incredible frame). At this time tow ratings are the responsibility of the manufacturer, so for similar vehicles tow ratings can be wildly different. Wheel base is also a big deal for stability 140" is generally the beginning of a good size for a stable tow vehicle.
I guess the net of all of this is that the Dodge is a great tow vehicle and if you stay within the tow limits everything will work fine. I would suggest that if you have anything heavy or valuable to tow ( I have a horse trailer ) invest in an electric brake controller, though most boat trailers have surge brakes. My trailer weighs 1200# /boat 4500# /50 Gallons of fuel 335#/ 10 Gallons water 80#/ additional crap 400#. If I'm just going to the lake (5 miles) I go fully loaded, anything further the boat goes on a diet.
Hope this helps a little.

I pull a 2002 Rinker Fiesta Vee 250 with mine. It is lifted on 35's with 3.55 gears so not set up for pulling and it does fine
