Default Does it surprise you how little dealers seem to know about their cars?

I am not an expert but am amazed how little passion and knowledge dealers seem to have. Not just dodge but the others too. Ask a question and get a blank stare in return.

Or you get only part of an answer or you get a total fabrication.

Hey...they just sell stuff. They aren't necessarily vehicle lovers like us.

I agree. This ram I bought was the first vehicle I bought at a dealer, and the guy was clueless(expected). I have found that if you know a good bit about cars, and are mechanically inclined, you can save a ton of money buying used through a small non brand dealer, or autotrader/craigslist/etc...I bought my ram at the dealer as I just went in to look around, and they offered an amazing deal for a 9 month old truck....but again, the guy was clueless. I did good though, the sales man was literally sweating by the time I signed up, no exaggeration, he was dripping sweat lol.

if you hang around here for long, you learn in a week more than most salesmen ever know
one week they work for 1 dealership & the next they are selling pet food & don't do that very well either

This used to bother me. I have always felt that if you selling a product, you should at least know something about it, other than what is immediately glaring at you in the showroom. I own my own business, and the number of products I offer is roughly equivalent to all the vehicles ever made in the last 100 years X the number of available options/variants. My customers 'expect' me to provide them a qualified answer to every conceivable question. Now it is not possible to know that much, with all the variants I'm faced with, so they understand when I offer to get the accurate details pertaining to their particular question, but they have to ask a pretty uncommon question to get that response from me. Having said that, knowing the available engine options, gearing options, color options, and how all the features work is IMO not too much to ask of a salesman.

I like my salesman....he gets it....and when I walk in to start the process, there are very few questions that he has to refer to the books to answer. By time I stop for the second visit, I could swear he was the head of the engineering team, as it's almost impossible to stump him.

that is false, unless they dont do their jobs. I used to be a salesman for a CDJ dealer and i used dealerconnect everyday. it was part of my job and the training that we had was put up in dealerconnect. Theres no way that they couldnt use it.. BUT I do agree that some damn people shouldnt be in the business! I am a auto enthusiest, and i could answer 98% of the questions about the vehicles i was selling. there were a few times that i had to tell the customer i dont know but i will go get the answer for you, and i did. People appreciated that i was honest with them. I worked for a very small dealer in a small town, so telling a customer a bunch of BS would have bit me in the butt in the long run. Some people need a job and its all they could come up with, some love what they do. Id say shop dealers until you find the right one who wont feed you guys a bunch of crap. You guys already have a leg up on the sales person by knowing so much about the product already. I will say that i am glad to be out of the business. Whew, rant is over

Its' been said above. Some of the salesmen actually have taken the time to learn about the products that they sell. These are the ones that can answer question intelligently and/ or let you know they've got to look for the answer. These are also the salesmen that have been doing it for awhile, they're the ones that are sent to "factory sales training" etc.

I've walked out on more than one dealership (various brands) over the years because the salesman was just plain clueless, and didn't wish to admit it. I don't know if they were a new employee, lazy, or just wanted to give me the answer that they thought I wanted to hear.... either way the results were the same.... I went somewhere else.

shop around and find someone knowledgeable. It's the best way to buy...

I have to agree, knowledge of the product you are selling, IMO, is important. When I bought my '07 Jeep, I had done a good bit of research, knew exactly what I wanted, options, features, preferred packages etc., priced several dealers (and they knew it, which is also an advantage lol) but the sales lady, nice as she was, really didn't know much about the vehicle. At the time, that dealership was relatively small, too, so the lines of vehicles they carried wasn't all that extensive for her not to know some of the basic features. Some people are just out to make a sale and those people don't get my business. I have bills to pay and a job to do, too and like that or not, I still take pride in the job I do and part of that is being able to give your customers the best, most accurate information you can, customer service, and with things being the way they are these days, one would think that with so many people competing for our every dollar, they would step it up a bit and take the initiative to learn their product and sell it well.
