Default Can you paint over chrome?

Ok, I'm trying to make the truck more uniform so I ordered a chrome tailgate handle cover. I've got the stock chrome handles on the doors which have the bases painted to match the truck and then just the handle itself is chrome. Could you scuff up the base of the chromed plastic cover and paint over it so it would more closely match the door handles? I really don't want the complete assembly chrome since the doors aren't that way also.

You can paint chrome, but from what I've read you need to prep it differently....I don't remember exactly the process, I think there is some bonding agent or adhesion promoter that you are supposed to use to get the primer to stick better. Google should help you out, but yes I've seen it done and it lasted.

^^^^

You have to sand it really well and then use self-etching primer. Then you can cover it with adhesion promoter and paint to match. I haven't done any chrome yet, but I have seen the process done on the bumpers, and they came out great!

This will be chrome on plastic. I've got the Putco Chrome handle overlay ordered for the tailgate handle. I'm wanting to leave the handle itself chrome as it comes, but paint the base of it green to match the truck and the existing door handles.

I'll pay a shop to do it if it's not gonna be too much. But i've painted plastic handles to match before with mixed results and wondered if I could do the same or if the chrome covering would screw it up.

I did a small Honda emblem that was plastic covered with chrome. I sanded the hell out of it with 200 grit and used self itching primer. It looked good but the paint didn't adhere very well. The paint would stay but was not very durable. If this is for a handle I would definitely say no.

Well, I figure ill just have a shop do it. Best I can tell just the supplies (paint, primer, adhesion promoter, clear coat, sandpaper, prep solvent) is gonna cost me $70 and I bet a professional job wont cost much more than that. We'll see.

yes you can paint over chrome but like stated above it needs to be prepped properly to do a good job
