Just out playing with mine. The manual suggests activating the Neutral button prior to engaging 4H or 4L. I got it to work in both however by putting the transmission in Neutral however the Neutral button doesn't light up when pushed. Is it supposed to? 4L definately engaged when turning too.

Activating the neutral button ?????

I think they refereed to placing the 'transmission' in neutral while shifting into 4LO. There is a 'procedure' for placing the T-case in neutral....and unless you are planning on towing the Ram behind an RV or something, you don't want this mode.

They make mention NOT to pause in the neutral position, as this may require shutting the engine off to complete the T-case shift....but this only applies to manual shift T-cases, not the electronic shift ones.

My '11 3500 diesel crew cab is strictly business in 4-low. If I turn sharp in gravel while moving slow, the front will surge the steering wheel, while the inside rear will "peel out" every three feet or so. I have assumed both axles "lock" while in 4-low. For that reason I never run 4-by on bare pavement.

It studders in 4hi lock or 4lo lock and the front tire will bind and chirp at full steering lock.

post up if you find more info on a change in the new models
^^^^ Mine behaves exactly the same way.

Thanks Brad. Makes sense to have the T-case in neutral when towing. Confusing when the instructions refer to using neutral and then have a button labelled neutral under the drive select knob.
If you have one, is it supposed to light up when activated? Mine does not.

cheers,

It only lights up when actually in neutral. The proceedure to place the T-case into neutral is -
Shift T-case to anything but 4WDauto
Turn engine off
Turn Key to the Run position (Do NOT Start)
Press and hold brake pedal
Place transmission in neutral
Press and hold the Neutral Button until the neutral light stays on solid (few seconds)
You can now place transmission in park and remove the key

(NOTE - Park will no longer stop your truck from rolling! Be Very Careful and use the park brake!)

To get it out of neutral, do the same procedure + park brake applied, but this time press the Neutral Button until the light goes out (not flashing)

For detailed information on this, look in your owners manual under 'Recreational Towing'.

So, don't try this on a hill facing the creek? Think I'll just leave it alone.

cheers,

I was reading that you can switch into 4wd auto and 4 high while you are driving up to 55 mph. So you do not have to stop to put it in 4wd hi.

That's my understanding though your mph may be a little high. This is the first dash mounted switch thing to change into 4 wheel drive I have had. The others were all manual.

I believe it is 55. I'm pretty sure you could do that with some of the manual t cases in third gens. I'm no engineer(yet) but im still a fan of being at a complete stop with the truck out of gear
