from the owners manual:

2H ⇔ 4H
Shifting between 2H and 4H can be made with the
vehicle stopped or in motion. If the vehicle is in motion,
shifts can be made up to 55 mph (88 km/h). With the
vehicle in motion, the transfer case will engage/
disengage faster if you momentarily release the accelerator
pedal after completing the shift. Apply a constant
force when shifting the transfer case lever.

So far, we haven't heard from anyone that has witnessed what would be expected (chatter, chirp, shake) in 4H or 4L on a 2011 with the active transfer case. I'm tempted to try it myself, but don't really have any access to dirt nearby, and well... I'm sitting in my office and the truck's outside...

Its amazing how difficult it is to find information on how this stuff actually works, but I haven't seen anything to indicate that a new front diff was used on the 2011's. Like others said, the front diff is open, meaning their aren't any clutches in there, and my initial conclusion is that the dealer is either just making crap up, or just doesn't understand. I might be wrong, but even the stability control system uses brake pressure, and doesn't do its thing by talking to some fancy intelligent differential. If you google DTCS or "Drive train control system", you pretty much get to this thread, so either the term is incorrect, or the dealer is just trying to sound intelligent about something he doesn't know anything about.

I HAVE seen some reviews that talked about using Chrysler's "new active transfer case" in the 2011s, but nothing official. They also talk about the "Front-axle Disconnect", but don't explain exactly how it works. Even if it IS a different case than the 2010's used, I would expect it to still work basically the same way. When in 4H or 4L, (not "AUTO"), that coupler should be completely locked up. If it's locked, and the rear drive shaft is turning, then the front one is turning as well, so at least one of the front wheels would have to turn.

Like BRH suggested, I would suspect that the coupler in the transfer case is never actually locking up. It's also possible that the "Front-axle Disconnect" is actually interceding when the wheels are turned to full lock in either direction, but that could cause you grief if you get stuck somewhere and need to be turned sharp to get out.

I'm really hoping that the OP's issue is a problem that can be fixed and not a new "feature".

Ok, a little more research into the DTCM (Drive Train Control Module). Talks about clutches and torque transfers, so this DOES line up with the OP's dealer comments. That is, IF this was just an AWD system like in a Charger or 300. For the trucks, it should ONLY apply when you're in "4AUTO" mode.

well after extensive testing, i figured out the problem with my 2011 dodge ram 1500 with the 4AUTO option on the 4wd selector. This transfer case is an active transfer case so according to the dealer it actually senses wheel speed and all that mumbo jumbo and knows when to kick the front end in, with my 37" tires it was throwing this all off, the truck wasn't seeing the needed revolutions for the front to engage, i threw stock tires back on and boom it works flawlessly, now the problem is there isnt a programmer out for the 11's yet. Although i just ordered a hyper tech speedo calibrator and had it overnight ed. Hopefully this will change the revs per mile in my trucks computer so that it can compensate for the larger tires.

Yes, but what about 4WD LOCK? This thread is about 4WD LOCK not locking up. AUTO is supposed to do what you just described (and yeah maybe your 37's screwed with it).

But I'm curious if 4WD LOCK is a true LOCK or some wishy washy electronic controlled crap..

i might have been a little vague, i meant to say that it is happening in the trucks with the 4auto option but when in 4wd lock, its just the way the case works and having the bigger tires screws it all up haha

Well for anyone who has there truck lifted and also has the 4auto option on there 4wd, I was having issues with mine not engaging the front end correctly, almost laggy kind of, i ended up getting a hyper tech speedo calibrator and boom problem completely gone, apparently out active transfer cases monitor wheel slip and speed, and that was all getting thrown off with the larger tires, i use the calibrator, drove it outside and it never skipped a beat. im really glad that it worked to because if not i was kinda screwed as far as the 4wd working properly
