Default What Brakes should I put on my Express RWD Coupe

Hi! Im at 40K miles and im starting to think about upgrading the brakes. i had to slam them on the other day, and they felt really squishy while the truck didnt really stop very well. frankly, i was dissapointed in the stock performance, BUT, Im in the market to upgrade and know very little about where to start. Will just a set of good looking pads from summit mean better stopping? do I need a "big brake kit"? HELP? I was getting the oil done today and they said i had 5mm of pads left, and that they would need to be replaced when they reach 2mm. idk anything about those numbers so if anyone can confirm? he said since i have 3mm left, i have about 10k miles left...i thought that number was high and would like to put new performance pads in within the next 6 months.

TL;DR What brake pads do I want for max performance, under $500?

2012 Ram Express 5.7 2 door, black

Thanks!
