just wondering, since i have owned trucks with 350 engines, from a 1970 up to the 1990s, i'm pretty sure sure thay all took 4 quarts of oil. how come we are up to seven quarts. is this how they got away from the 3000 mile oil change to todays extended drain intervals or is there another reason. just wondering.

I've never owned a v8 old or new that didn't take at least 5 qts. Most small 4 cylinders and some 6 cylinders take 4 qts. More fluid allows the fluid to stay a little cooler, and it doesn't break down as fast or get as contaminated as fast. So yes it helps with longer intervals...but is not the only reason for this. Some engines are just weird too, as my ford 300 inline 6 took 7.5 qts if I remember correctly...

5 quarts with a filter is what they took.

Engines are built to tighter tolerances today, generate a bit more heat and need the additional lubrication capacity to circulate more oil to the areas that need it.
