Default Loss of power???

Has anyone done a "loss of power after upgraded muffler" thread yet? I always hear that Flowmaster causes a loss of power (low end from most of what I've read) and I started Googling and apparently other brands can cause a perceived loss of power too (i.e. Magnaflow).

I had a FlowMaster 60 Series (Deltaflow) on my F150 and I loved, but internet research kept me reluctant from upgrading the exhaust in my 09 Ram (the orange one)..

.. I drove about 500 miles yesterday to pick up a 2010 Crew (need to update my profile and pic) and I've decided I'm definitely doing the "mods" on this one. Just don't want to pick the wrong muffler and risk losing the pleasure of dusting my cousins '09

I'm looking for that "89 Mustang 5.0 with flowmasters" sound.

Has anyone actually noticed or logged a loss of power after exhaust upgrade?

By the way.. after a whole two months away, it's great to be back in a Ram

I have a Mufflex DOD14M (Aggressive) on mine and I love the way it sounds. I haven't noticed any loss or gain for that matter. It just sounds awesome and I figure when I get my CAI it will add a little more growl to it.

I lost 3whp and 7lbstq on my Camaro when i put a blowmaster on, it was a 80 series though.

Look into spintech mufflers, they have that sound your looking for, would just have to be a "custom" catback

Was this compared to another aftermarket muffler? I find it hard to believe you would lose power compared to a stock muffler.

To the OP, it's nearly impossible to lose power just from a muffler swap. There is no muffler out there that is more restrictive than the stock one, so no matter what you swap to it will flow better. And the "back pressure is good for low end" myth is just that, a myth. Many don't realize that it's the diameter of the exhaust pipe that helps/hurts low end power, not back pressure, and while using a smaller diameter exhaust pipe does create slightly more back pressure, it's not the back pressure that's important. Back pressure is ALWAYS bad for power, at any rpm. Having high exhaust velocity helps scavenging, especially at low rpm, so if you changed the exhaust pipe to a huge diameter, you would lose low end. If you use a smaller diameter the exhaust gases will flow faster, and you will gain low end. This is why I say if the only thing you change is the muffler, there is no way you will lose power, at any rpm.

Flowmasters are chambered/baffled mufflers, they aren't really very good for flow, but if you like the sound then go for it. I would recommend a straight through type muffler if you're looking for performance.

EDIT: and I think a lot of people's posts about feeling a loss of power is just in their head. Keep in mind people sometimes perceive acceleration based on how it sounds, and since it's louder it may sound like it's revving slower to them....etc...

That Youtube clip is what helped me decide to buy the Super 44 last week... won't be here until next week though and I'm getting impatient!

Thanks for the input everyone.
